Thread: Console freezes starting X (mtrr?)

  1. Console freezes starting X (mtrr?)

I have two supposedly identical systems (SunFire 4200 servers running
    RHEL 4.0).
I boot into run-level 5, but one freezes as X starts. Is configured
to use mwm window manager but I'm not sure that's the problem - the
    other system is fine.

    /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows:

(WW) ATI(0): Failed to set up write-combining range
    (0xfd000000,0x800000)

    where the working system has:
    (==) ATI(0): Write-combining range (0xfd000000,0x800000)

Google search mentioned possible problems with "mtrr" (I don't know
what this is), but cat /proc/mtrr gives:

    reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=16384MB: write-back, count=1
    reg01: base=0xe0000000 (3584MB), size= 512MB: uncachable, count=1

    where the working system gives:
    reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=2048MB: write-back, count=1
    reg01: base=0x80000000 (2048MB), size=1024MB: write-back, count=1
    reg02: base=0xc0000000 (3072MB), size= 512MB: write-back, count=1
    reg03: base=0xfd000000 (4048MB), size= 8MB: write-combining, count=1

A search for mtrr in /var/log/messages gives several errors of:
Jun 14 14:59:00 ES0 kernel: mtrr: type mismatch for fd000000,800000
    old: write-b
    ack new: write-combining

I have tried comparing files on the system, all seems the same apart
    from 2 extra files in /var/gdm :0.Xservers and :1.Xservers that run X
    - don't know if they're relevant or how they're created.
The working system has gdm-binary spawned X and ssh-agent mwm, and
from there mwm; broken system has gdm-binary spawning X and separate
ssh-agent, but no sign of mwm :-(

    Any ideas?
    Mark

Hardware. Check memory and power supply first. Also loose
    connections etc.
