  1. XFree86 and ATI radeon 9200SE

    Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.. I've nvidia nforce2 chipset, linux 2.6.1,
    and ati radeon 9200se card that works ok with 2.4 series kernel and "fglrx"
    driver from ati. I installed X from http://dri.sf.net/ by compiling a source
    rpm and installing it, compiled kernel modules agpgart, nvidia_agp and radeon,
    modprobed those, said in XF86Config-4 that "driver" is "radeon" and
    X starts, no problem. Only problem is that direct rendering is not used.
    glxinfo tells me that it is "mesa indirect" that is doing the rendering
    and it can be easily noticed as every 3d app is dog slow. Weird thing
    is that according to log files everything seems to be ok, there is even
    a promising line in XFree86.log.0 saying
    (II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering enabled
    but then "glxinfo" tells me otherwise. I'm attaching my XF86Config-4 and
    the X startup log if anyone would have any good ideas? .. I'm overriding
    the ChipID as otherwise X won't find the card at all, I'm telling it that
    there is a radeon8500 in there

    On my radeon 8500LE, the radeon module sends this message to the
    kernel log when X starts:

    Direct rendering works as expected on my system. I'm using a 2.4.24
    kernel and XFree86 4.3.0 vanilla driver, though:
    OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
    OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20020827 AGP 4x x86/MMX/3DNow! TCL
    OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 4.0.4

    Does "cat /proc/dri/0/name" output make sense?

    Looks fine to me, so I'd try to check how the kernel modules are doing

    there were only "normal" messages about thinges being initialized, nothing
    that looked like error message..that particular box is right now powered
    off and in another building so now log snippets available.

    need to check. I thing I did look at every file /proc/dri/0 and it
    did look sane.

    you're using 2.4 kernel? actually I tried this same driver out in 2.4 kernel
    before going for ati's own fglrx driver (that does work) and I had the
    same symptons there: X starts and looks ok but dri is mysteriously missing.
    now these same problems just continue when I'm trying to use 2.6 kernel.
