    Here are the components:

    Hardware: Monitor: Dell 3008WFP
    Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon X850 XT (R480)
    Software: Xorg 7.1.1 (Debian Etch).
    Linux 2.6.25.6

    The monitor is supposed to support various resolutions, in particular
    2560x1600, but one needs dual-link DVI for that. The graphics card
    supposedly supports dual-link DVI, Xorg on that graphics card also
    supposedly supports it (according to
    ), and I am using the dual-link
    DVI cable that came with the monitor.

    What I get without specifying a resulution in the xorg.conf file is a
    mode that is 2560x1600 according to xdpyinfo and the Xorg.*.log file,
    and also according to the monitor's on-screen display, but that looks
    like 1280x1600 in 1:1 mode (but like a 16:10 mode in the "aspect
    ratio" mode), and where the characters are unreadable in either mode.

    What's even stranger is that trying other resolutions (in particular
    1920x1200, 1600x1200, 1280x1024) results in even worse behaviour:
    either the screen stays black, or the monitor detects no signal and
    goes into standby mode.

    The interesting thing is, that if I have the old CRT connected and
    turned on as additional screen when starting X, X decides it wants to
    use clone mode, and chooses a 1280x1024 mode, and that mode works on
    the Dell (unlike the 1280x1024 mode it uses if I don't turn on the
    CRT, when I try to force that resolution through the Xorg.conf file.
    Currently I am using that way to work on the machine.

    Are the problems I experience software problems that can be solved
    with a newer Xorg version (e.g., the one from Debian Lenny, or maybe a
    newer version I compile myself)? Or do they indicate that some of my
    hardware is not working properly? Which one?

    I tried to exclude a hardware problem by trying it with Windows XP,
    but there I don't get a real resolution beyond 1920x1200 (the driver
    seems to support a virtual resolution up to 2048x1536, but shows me
    only a scrollable 1920x1200 window into that; didn't know Windows XP
    also had this "feature"); I suspect that that's a software problem,
    though.

    An update on this: I tried various Live CDs, with no luck. The best I
    tried was Ubuntu 7.10, which managed 1920x1200 all by itself (Ubuntu
    8.04 also manages this, but the left half of the screen then
    flickers). But when I modify the xorg.conf file to produce 2560x1600,
    I get the same effect as under Debian Etch. Also, further attempts to
    get 2560x1600 with this graphics card under Windows XP failed, too.

    I also tried using the other DVI port, but that was even worse (no
    picture in more cases).

    I also tried an Nvidia 8600GT that a friend lent me, and at least it
    worked under Windows XP, so the cable and the monitor are ok.

    So I conclude that my Radeon X850XT is not capable of doing 2560x1600
    properly.

    can build the X server and/or the drivers myself. Can anybody
    recommend a graphics card that satisfies these requirements?

    Another alternative may be to use the Nvidia card and set it up to
    produce two 1280x1600 on its two outputs (should not need dual-link
    capabilities), and combine them into a 2560x1600 picture using the
    monitor's pbp feature. However, this has a number of disadvantages:

    1) The monitor does not support pbp with both inputs coming in on DVI
    ports; therefore one has to come in through the VGA port, i.e., in
    analog form, probably leading to worse image quality (which will be
    especially noticable with the other half of the display being in
    digital form).

    2) The monitor documentation warns against connecting both ports to
    the same computer.

    3) It would take a bit of effort to set up.

    I just bought a Sapphire Radeon X1650 Pro (prices start from EUR
    40,-), plugged it in, and voila, 2560x1600 with Debian Lenny (with the
    radeon driver, have not tried radeonhd).

    A disadvantage of the card ist that (with the Lenny drivers) direct
    rendering does not work. If I invoke any OpenGL application, it
    greets me with:

    unknown chip id 0x71c1, can't guess.
    libGL warning: 3D driver returned no fbconfigs.
    libGL error: InitDriver failed
    libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering

    But since I don't need 3D, that's ok for me.

    Another advantage of the card is that it needs less power.
