I tried all the modes that work[1] for mplayer, and they all say

vo: X11 running at 1600x1200 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0.0" => local display)

Is that normal? I thought that with other output drivers, that line
would change to reflect the driver used.

    mplayer -V:
    MPlayer dev-CVS--4.0.2 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team

    xdpyinfo:
    X.Org version: 6.8.2

    X driver:
    -rwxr--r-- 1 eben eben 17M Mar 17 01:52 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run*

    card:
0000:05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation: Unknown
    device 0392 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])

    (Geforce 7600 GS)

    [1] x11 isn't full screen but works; ggi, svga, and directfb hang;
fbdev, fbdev2, vesa don't work at all, and the rest all look the same
and use about the same amount of CPU

X11 (or just X) is the low level protocol for about any graphical
output on Unix/Linux. Most of mplayer's video output drivers use X11.

MPlayer's x11 video driver is just the one using plain X11 without any
    extensions like XV, OpenGL, ...

    So yes, it's normal.
