Thread: Debian - Can't get X to work - log included

  1. Debian - Can't get X to work - log included

I'm trying to set up a Linux system, using the setup CD's for a Woody
distribution. I used the Debian bf24 kernel installation routine. It boots
and seems to be functional - but, it X won't initiate an xdm desktop. When
booting hits the point where it should start up X, the screen blinks 3
times (w/ pauses), then leaves me at a command prompt for login. I haven't
sent anything to submit@bugs.debian.org, because the documentation says
they require one to be working w/ the latest distribution before submitting
    bug reports. (I'm working w/ v4.1, whereas they're distributing v4.4 now.)
I've downloaded v4.4, but haven't managed to accomplish an md5 check of the
files yet - still working on it; but, in the meantime, I'm hoping that
somebody will be able to tell why the v4.1 is aborting.

Thanks in advance, if you can figure out what I need to do to get this X
    desktop functioning!

Seems to be complaining about your screen layout (see message at end
of your log file). In the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, does the screen
section called out in the server layout section correspond to what you
    have?

    Hi, Bryan!

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes, it did correspond. However, since last night's session messing with
the unfinished OS setup, things have changed. I managed to accomplish the
md5 checks last night, and installed the new v4.4.0 X installation today. I
rebooted, and it works! The system current boots to an X login screen.
After logging in, it sets up an xterm session.

Now, I need to figure out what I need to know in order to have more than
just xterm running in xdm, and some graceful way to exit X (terminate &
kill all X processes) for doing more tweaking of system settings, etc. For
example, I haven't run any post-installation configuration utility on the
    new X setup yet.

Glad you're up and running. I don't use xdm, so I can't help there.
    Good luck.

? xdm is the most basic (least friendly) X login manager that exists.
xterm does not run under xdm; it runs under X. If you log in via xdm
and you see a gray screen with only an xterm running, and you can't
drag the xterm around by its titlebar, you've managed to start X with
only an xterm running and *no window manager*. This is bad; you want to
have a window manager running. Look in ~/.xsession ; it should be
executable and the last line in there should be something like

    exec $WINDOWMANAGER

....where WINDOWMANAGER is twm, fluxbox, fvwm2, olwm, or one of the many
    window managers available.

    >> and some graceful way to exit X (terminate & kill all X processes)

Your window manager provides this. Right-click on the desktop and
select "log out". When the process that was exec'ed at the end of the
..xsession file exits, X shuts down. This is by design. The ungraceful
    way is, of course, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

You may want to run one. I don't know what Debian provides for this.
If you want a pretty, shiny, friendly, GUI-fied X environment, install
KDE 3.3 or whatever the latest version of KDE you can get for Debian is.
If you want a lean, fast, simple X environment, fluxbox will provide
    that. HTH,

    Hello, Dances With Crows!

Thanks for the reply and advice! I'm going to save your post onto
FlashDrive for referring to later on the project machine.

I think I tried the menu-clicking, and nothing at all happened; part, of
why I was stumped. I've become aware of the shortcomings of xdm, but I
allowed that default to be installed because I'd had a problem in a
previous OS installation, where the configuration utility told me that X
Windows required xdm in order to function. Now, I'm stuck with it until I
learn a bit more about system configuration tweaking. I've been working a
bit w/ KDE via a Knoppix CD, so I've got a bit of familiarity with that -
but, I was thinking of trying to set up the system for working with gdm,
for the sake of gaining experience. I'm hesitant to run any sort of
configuration utility at this point, because it's working - something I
never managed to achieve on this HP 6360 machine before now. (In other
words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!) As a fall-back, it's nice to know
    about the Ctrl-Alt-Backspace combo. Thanks!
