Is there a way to detach/reattach an X window, similar to how text-mode
programs can be detached with the screen program?

Yes, but you need a proxy server. Wayne Throop has written about this
topic before and talked about "xmove".
http://freeware.sgi.com/source/xmove/ for the source code. It can
create a pseudo-display on :1 and redirect applications displaying on :1
to anywhere, :0 or remote:0 or something like that.
