  1. XF86 4.3.0.1 black screen on startup

    Dear Gurus,
    I'm running Debian Sarge, Kernel 2.6.3 and XFree86 4.3.0.1.
The machine is uptodate, and perhaps that's part of the problem.
I hardly ever reboot, and frequently "apt-get upgrade". And after my
last reboot all of a sudden X doesn't work. All I get is a blank
screen. I've been using the same config file for a long time, one
generated by SuSE's SaX program. It's never failed in the past.
But obviously something has changed when I did my last upgrade. For
    now
nothing works. Well, X doesn't quit on an error, it comes up, but
    just
    with an unusable black screen.

My machine is a Dell Inspiron 5000. With a 1400x1050 LCD screen.

I'm at a complete loss, so I include the configuration file followed
    by the log file.

Please, any suggestions? THis is completely baffeling me. And I'm
getting tired of using Lynx to surf the web (lol).

    Thanks for your time,

    -jason

This won't do anything if your xfs isn't running. Since running xfs
usually complicates things for no good reason, you might want to comment
this out as you have FontPath elements defined a bit later.

    OK.

This is supposed to work for radeon and r128 cards too, but it's really
    for Mach64 cards.

    Figures.

Ah, so it *is* really a Mach64.

This is probably the real problem. Wonder why it didn't show up with a
(WW) or (EE) in front? Do the Debian equivalent of "emerge xfree"
again, since with unresolved symbols in atimisc_drv.o, your Mach64 card
    won't work right.

    > (EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse

This is actually OK, since you had AllowMouseOpenFail defined above.

Okay, I reinstalled x-windows-server through apt. I still get the
    same thing.

Then I fscked my HD, and started a complete fresh OS install of Debian
Sarge. I still got this darn blank screen. (It was a net install and
I got X 4.3 again). The configuration file doesn't seem to much
matter. I use the auto-detect defaults and a number of hand-tweeks
and I get nothing. No variation from the black screen.

So I tried to install Woody (Debian stable). This comes with X
4.1.0.1 This time X came up just fine. I got exactly what I'm
    expecting.

So my end solution was to install Sarge and just tell "apt-get -t
stable x-window-server" to make sure I got the old version instead of
    the new.

I'll have to figure out how to "Pin" the version later.

So my conclusion is that the broke something in 4.3 for my hardware.
    Ugh.
