There can be a variety of causes for this behavior.

When you see the network on "Choose a wireless network" does it indicate
that it is a "security enhanced wireless network"? If so, you need the
    proper encryption key.

There are other security measures that may be in place as well; are you
trying to connect to your own router or to someone else's network?

with the sky netgear modem wireless router
you will find the WEP security key that you need on a stick
stuck on the router somewhere and you should have had another
    sticker with it on also.
These sky routers come with WEP key ready programmed in so
unless you enter it when your wireless laptop finds the router you cannot
    connect.
