Hi Chris,
I saw a similar bug report for this problem and the resolution was that first
make sure that you are using the correct JVM for the OS (check edocs.bea.com for
the JVM and OS information), second make sure that /tmp is not full. Let me know
if this doesn't solve your problem.

Thats probably it.
I was installing 8.1 sp 1 using the jvm supported at 8.1sp2
I will try installing 8.1sp2 and see if that works.
