  1. OVMS Integrity BASIC LTU Getting only 1 user at cost of $2400.00???

Ordered HP Basic LTU for integrity BA347AC "concurrent license" at a
list price of $2400.00. Installed on rx2620 system and can only get
    "ONE
    USER" on system.

Get following error when second user tries to use basic.

Having hard time believing that cost for ONE USER basic license is
    $2400.00.

Has anyone ever seen this??? Say it isn't so!!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of DEC/Compaq/HP licensing. The rates
per "seat" vary with the horsepower of the machine, but it ain't cheap.
If you buy, say, 50 or 100 "seats" you can probably get a quantity
discount but it still ain't cheap.

I'm a little surprised that you bought a system without understanding
the software licensing required and the pricing thereof!

What does the *first* user do at that time ?

Also post the SHOW LICENCE for the rellevant product.

By "use" you meen running the compiler at the *same time*, right ?

You can easaly "fix" this by running the compiles on a
batch queue with a JOB_LIMIT=1. Or any other way that
makes only one copy of the compiler been running at a time.

Or wait 10 seconds and re-try the BAS command.

This isn't a major problem. If you have many developers
on your system, you could probably add 1 or 2 additional
"users" and have 10-20 developers running without any
    particular problem.

And $2400 isn't that much. You can't get a full copy
of the Adobe "Master Collection" at that price, and that
is for one single, single-user system...

I do not see what your problem is...

Hhmmm... Doesn't look right. I'd expect "attempted usage exceeds
available license units" or some similar message.

The message you got seems to indicate that the license is not even
loaded. If you registered the PAK, did you then do a LICENSE LOAD to
    reload all the available PAKs?

What does SHOW LICENSE say about the BASIC PAK?
    $ SHOW LICENSE BASIC

What does the output of this command look like:
    $ SHOW LOGICAL/TABLE=LMF$* *BASIC*

    D.J.D.

Correct me if I am wrong, but this is just the compiler. There is no
cost to run programs compiled with the compiler. So, put the compiles
in a batch job if you have more than one developer.

$2400 is a bit high I agree, but not terribly so.

I cam recall when a license to run the Fortran compiler on a VAX-11/750
cost $5000 US. If you wanted the C compiler too, that was ANOTHER
    $5000. This was ca. 1985/6.

    Len,

As has been commented, please verify that the license is actually
loaded. There are two steps to inputting a license: registering the
license in the database, and then loading the license. During the
bootstrap process, all active licenses are loaded as part of one of
the startup phases. If doing this without a reboot, a common error is
to register but fail to load the license.

Omitting the specific license key, please post the results of a
LICENSE LIST/FULL command for the BASIC compiler (of course, omit the
    actual Authorization value).

If economizing by using the one concurrent user license for the
    compiler, there are four options:
    - self discipline
    - batch queue for compiling with a JOB_LIMIT of 1
    - it is possible to implement something slightly more elegant using
locks (preferable) or logical names (simpler) to allow only one
    compile at a time
    - use a DECnet TASK object to control access to the compiler for
    interactive users

If not, the *first* user would not be able to use it, would he ?
Note that Len complained about the *second* user.

I personaly think that he simply has got a "Concurrent Use"
BASIC license with one (1) user currently. The cheaper version
is (or was) "Named User" where only a specific username
could run the compiler (or whatever). Could also be used
with the batch queue with JOB_LIMIT=1 and submitting with
    /USER=.

    Jan-Erik.

The first user of Basic works just fine. (No Problems) Show license
indicates the license is loaded with a units of "1". But then again
when you so a show license on OVMS "FOE" it also has a units
of "1". (Unlimited license) I'm still not convinced that this BASIC
    license shouldn't be unlimited.

Any other ideas or should I just BUCK UP??

    Hi Bob:

I understand but if license NEVER loaded why would one user be
able to run a compile?? (I would think NO user could complie)
I will follow up with results of show license.

    $ SHOW LICENSE/USAGE

Some licenses have a unmber of UNITS associated with them and an ACTIVITY
charge for using it (ie. CONSTANT=#). So, if you have a license with two
units and an activity charge of CONSTANT=1, the licensed product can be
used by, for example, two processes. What is the "ACTIVITY" on you VMS
    FOE license?

In your case, the license has UNITS 1 and an ACTIVITY charge of 1; how-
ever, I think it is bad form to have the compiler dump because of a lic-
ence issue -- it should return a resonable error status and message in-
    dicating the problem.

    There were per-machine, per-user-count, and specific-user licenses
available from DEC. I was really surprised at how cheap the
specific-user licenses were for compilers when I got my first
Alpha, compared to what I'd been paying for per-machine licenses
    for compilers on VAXen.

Which was great, because I bought the system to replace a MV II
Pathworks server and I was the only one even thinking about
    compiling stuff on it.

But the C compiler at $5000 (6000 in canada) was for the platform, and
you could have concurrent users because the licence was for that
    machine's type.

In its last days, DEC moved away from specific machines towards machine
classes (workstation, workgroup, enterprise if I remember correctly).

The per-user licence is supposed to be much cheaper and not tied to any
type of machine and that is the one which limits concurrent users.

If you ordered a licence that was for your machine, were quoted a price
of $2400 for the machine, but were given a 1-user licence, then
    something is not right.

Perhaps you should do a licence list/full basic and post it here, I
suspect many here would be able to tell you what the product code is and
you could check against your invoice to ensure that you got what you
    paid for.
