(Pasting into my newsreader caused the new lines in the middle of all
the "aaa"'s.)

The uppercase A and the error message resulted when I hit the 1st
uparrow.

The 2nd uparrow recalled the long line of "aaa...aaa" and the 3rd
uparrow echoed as another "A" and repeated the error message. No
stack dump. No bogus jump, as far as I can tell. Looks to be fixed.

(Patches available for I64 V8.2, V8.2-1, V8.3 and V8.3-1H1, and for
VMS V7.3-2, V8.2 and V8.3. No patch for VAX of any version, at least
not yet.)

Link time of the kit's SMGSHR.EXE: 7 weeks before release.

Note there is a small issue with the recently released SMGRTL patch
kits. The special installation instructions in the release notes are
incorrect

E.g in VMS732_SMGRTL-V0100.RELEASE_NOTES section 7.5

INSTALL REPLACE SYS$SHARE:SMGRTL.EXE

Should be

INSTALL REPLACE SYS$SHARE:SMGSHR.EXE

(this applies if you have multiple nodes booting from one system disk.
You install the kit on one node and do the above INSTALL command on
the other nodes).

Add more coffee - there are three letters difference. One has RTL and
the other SHR.

Yeah, I had to look twice, too.

More coffee and my specs did the trick.

:P

I see the eye doctor readily to check for diabetic retinopathy. About 2
years ago I was written a prescription for specs; I only recently filled
it. I'm still getting used to wearing them. I wake every morning, get a
cup of coffee and venture down to the VAXcave forgetting to grab them off
of the dresser where I perch them the night before. Maybe I'll start to
take them off at my desk in the eve and leave them there.

I have a prescription for specs as well, but I don't need them unless
I'm doing close work, or my morning coffee quota has not been met. I
have two pair of drugstore 1.5x fold up specs. One hangs next to my
monitor, and one I carry in my "man purse". ;^) They're handy because
they are half height, so I can easily peer over them to see the big stuff.

FWIW, reading the patch description text (Yes, with my specs on), there
is nothing to indicate the severity of or need for applying this patch!
I'd wager that there are sites that will NEVER install this patch unless
they see some buffer overflow in SMG. Unless this patch is listed as a
SECURITY patch, people not following what has been going on here for the
better part of a week will not install it.

2 KIT DESCRIPTION:

2.1 Installation Rating:

INSTALL_1 : To be installed by all customers.

This installation rating, based upon current CLD information, is
provided to serve as a guide to which customers should apply this
remedial kit. (Reference attached Disclaimer of Warranty and

At the risk of sounding sarcastic.

Dude, it's a "1".

That ought to tell you something.

However I will complain that the description of the "problem" in the
release notes is severely innocuous.

If I ran the zoo, I'd have made this a MUP.

I've already had specs for a couple of decades for long distance work,
in essence for driving, reading presentations when at the back of a
room, and so on. I recall that it did take a while to get into the habit
of remembering to take them with me.

I'd definitely recommend getting a spare pair, not only as a counter for
forgetfulness, but in case of a system failure (in my case the
unexpected chewing of my first pair by a puppy!).

Yes. the rating is INSTAL_1, but it should be a MUP!

WalMart, K-Mart, and their ilk are your friend in this particular
case. I've got 6 pairs of very cheap ($6 - $12) reading glasses
scattered around the house and car. I even have one pair expressly to
be left in the briefcase to avoid travelling mishaps. :-)

Ah, the joys of advancing age.
