  1. DFU privilege problem (ON TOPIC!!!)

    Greetings,

    I have this intermittent problem with DFU, esp. on one specific
    system. It's been okay for months and today it starting acting up. For
    some reason, I need BYPASS to run the BITMAP.SYS portion of DFU
    REPORT. In fact, it reliably needs BYPASS today.

    Example:

    $ SET PROC/PRIV=(ALL,NOBYPAS)
    $ DFU REP SYS/NOVOL/NOFILE

    Disk and File Utilities for OpenVMS DFU V2.4
    Freeware version
    Copyright 1996 Digital Equipment Corporation

    %DFU-I-REPORT, Reporting on SYS: (XXXXX3$DKA100

    %DFU-E-BITMAP, Error opening bitmap,
    %SYSTEM-F-NOPRIV, insufficient privilege or object protection
    violation
    $ SET PROC/PRIV=BYPASS
    $ DFU REP SYS/NOVOL/NOFILE

    Disk and File Utilities for OpenVMS DFU V2.4
    Freeware version
    Copyright 1996 Digital Equipment Corporation

    %DFU-I-REPORT, Reporting on SYS: (XXXXX3$DKA100

    ***** Free space statistics (from BITMAP.SYS) *****
    Total blocks on disk : 8380080
    Total free blocks : 6237801
    Percentage free (rounded) : 74
    Total free extents : 291
    Largest free extent : 2000952 blocks at LBN: 6379128
    Average extent size (rounded) : 21435
    Free space fragmentation index : 0.042 (excellent)

    %DFU-I-READY, REPORT command ready
    $

    Not a major problem; I modified my daily check-systems command
    procedure to temporarily enable BYPASS just for DFU REPORT. But on
    this system I took those steps out long ago and today it starting
    acting up.

    Can anyone explain what's going on? No, I didn't make any changes to
    my system recently and I've been running this command without BYPASS
    since about 11-JUN-2007.

    Check for the DFU_ALLPRIV identifier (and why you sometimes miss it ;-)

    It's there and it's always been there. Why would it go away? Why would
    BYPASS override the lack of it?

    BTW, suddenly it's working again without BYPASS. I made no changes to
    the system. ... The mystery continues.
