    FWIW, the options list at
    http://h18002.www1.hp.com/alphaserve...ml#OptListHead
only lists the DE500-BA and -FA, both as not supported.

The DE500-AA, -BA, and -XA are supported on those versions of the operating
system. I suppose it's possible that the XP1000 was never qualified with those
options, but I'd expect them to work correctly.

Please report back if you have experiences to the contrary.

From both the LANCP and switch output, it appears as though the DE500-XA
should be working. What protocol(s) do you expect to flow over that wire?

No matter what i set the EWB0_MODE to in SRM and "mc lancp set
dev/speed=x/(no)full" to, and the cisco interface settings to, you never
get a link up. Nor does it show up on a "show mac" on the cisco.

I thought I could look at the SRM variable with ^P and then resume with
CONT. But it crashed:-( and caused all the shadow in the SAN to start
merge :-( :-( I should have reset that cluster time variable, whatever it
    is called.

    Anyway upon booting

What's the switch set to? As the -XA does not autonegotiate,
if the console is set to FastFD, the switch port should be set to FastFD.
If the switch is set to autonegotiate, the console should be set to Fast
(this is what the ethernet engineer has suggested)

So that means that VMS sees the device and various protocols
are running on them (you can see what protocols are associated with which
device with $ SHOW DEVICE/FULL EWB

More from the ethernet driver guy . . .

"He probably does have a duplex mode mismatch. Or he has the speed wrong so it
doesn't work at all. A simple glance at the internal counters and device
counters, LANCP SHOW DEV/INT and DEV/COU would identify what the problem was,
    most likely."

His response to my question of the -XA on the XP1000 . . .

"Yes, it should work. I'm sure it does."

  12. Re: DE500-XA on XP1000

Some of the DE500 models have problems with Auto-negotiation, I would
    suggest setting both the DE500
AND the router/switch to the same value (100 FD for preference) and DISABLE
    Auto-negotiation on both.
(I fell foul of this some years ago with a DE500 that set itself to FD but
the switch thought was in HD - the results
    were "interesting".)

Thanks, Rob, I swapped out the DE500-XAs for DE-600 and life is good.

As for HBMM, my cluster has VAXen, Alphas and Itania.
