The KL10 was introduced in 1975. The console FE on a KL10 was always a
PDP-11/40. There was no other way to load the microcode, start the CPU, or
run diags.

KL10 Comm FEs were usually PDP-11 based, but if you had a system that was
upgraded from an earlier CPU (166, KA10, or KI10), and your KL10 had the
DIA20 I/O bus interface (standard on DECsystem-10 configurations, optional
on some DECSYSTEM-20s), you could still use a PDP-8 based comm system.
