I also need to restore a mailbox store (the public one).
I have netBackup 5.1 MP3 and my public folders just over 10Gb.
My Exchange server is 2003 enterprise.
Here is my log:

Is that a setting on the backup server?

I had an identical error reported to my by our Exchange admin. He was using
the Windows restore GUI locally on the Exchange server and found he was accidently
trying to restore the Exchange database to the wrong container, the database
was reporting the WRN-desired byte count error, as it obviously didn't understand
why the data stream ended so abruptly.
This may help someone else.

So what is the workaround to this problem? I have also tried to restore and
get the WRN errors. It looks like it is restoring for 2 hours and then it
finishes and there is nothing there. The logs and databases are there, but
there are about 2 megs each! Thanks for your help.

Re: Exchange 2000 Restore
I encountered this error message when trying to restore exchange 2003. The
problem was that the Recovery Storage group was created. I deleted it and
was able to restore the database. Once the Recovery Storage group is created,
all restores will be directed to it. In my case, I had removed the mailbox
store from the Recovery Storage Group, thinking that if it was not there,
the restore would go to the original location. Not true, you must either
restore to mailbox stores in the Recovery Storage group or delete it completely
to recover to the original location.

The Exchange Information Store automatically redirects all restore operations
to the Recovery Storage Group (if a Recovery Storage Group exists on the
server). When a Recovery Storage Group is created on a server, Exchange checks
to see if the database that is selected for the restore operation is present
in the Recovery Storage Group. If it is present, the database files are restored
to the Recovery Storage Group. If it is not present, the restore operation
stops. Event messages that are similar to the following may appear in the
application event log:

If you delete the Recovery Storage Group, the information store reverts to
typical restore behavior. That is, restore operations are not automatically
redirected to the Recovery Storage Group.
If you do not want to restore data to the Recovery Storage Group and you
do not want to delete the Recovery Storage Group, create the Recovery SG
Override value in the following registry key, and then set the value to 1:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \System \CurrentControlSet \Services \MSExchangeIS \ParametersSystem
When you create this value, the information store ignores the Recovery Storage
Group during a restore operation. Warning Serious problems might occur if
you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using
another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating
system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify
the registry at your own risk.
To create and configure the Recovery SG Override registry value: 1. Click
Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \System \CurrentControlSet \Services \MSExchangeIS \ParametersSystem
4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type Recovery SG Override, and then press ENTER.
6. On the Edit menu, click Modify

Important Make sure that you delete the Recovery SG Override registry value
