Nelson,
"Yes" and "Yes". I wrote a script that monitors /var/adm/messages for
telltale signs of the robot going down [look for string "Mode_sense error"]
and another script that monitors drive status and looks for changes. I'm
afraid the drive script is incomplete in that I got it to warn me when a
drive went down but I never added in code to tell me if/when it came back
up.
A cleaner solution would be to implement SNMP but I haven't been able to
figure out how to get the MIB to work with the SNMP trap server and STK has
been less than helpful.

If you are using NBU v6 and NetBackup Operations Manager running, you can
created an alert policy which will email and/or send an SNMP trap if a drive
goes to a down state.
