While writing some scripts to manage archived logs during the backup of an
Oracle 8i database an idea struck me. It would be more robust to have an
agent do both the backup of the database and manage the archived log files.

However the supplied agent with BE 7.x only allows for backing up datafiles
and not for managing logs. Current remotely run a pre and post script,
remotely on the database machine, which deletes old logs and shutsdown the
db. This creates a possibly fragile chain of events, that might fail and
cause.

Are Third Party agents available?
Does Veritas make an API for creating agents available?
Is the protocol that agents and the backup server use documented anywhere?
Is it possible or feasible to write a custom Backup Exec agent?

Any thoughts or comments gratefully received.
