Thread: No notifications with BE9.0

  1. No notifications with BE9.0

    Hi,

    Is anybody else seeing this?
We have set some notification options under BE9.0 build 4454, but there are
no notifications being sent at all.
We configured SMTP, defined some recipients for SMTP, and assigned some
categories to these recipients. When pushing the "Test" button, the test
message is succesfully sent, but other then that nothing happens.

    Are we missing something?

    Thanks,

    Ed van Balen

Is the smtp server on the other side of a firewall? From a command line
on the BEWS server, can you get an answer from the smtp server with
telnet? For example, telnet mailhost 25

Yes, I can contact the SMTP server through telnet.
And, like I said, I can send a test message from BE9.0
Still, the real notifications are not being sent.
Does it work for you, with BE9.0 build 4454?
In our case it is an upgrade over BE8.5
In BE8.5 we had notifications configured as well, but upon upgrading these
    settings were all gone.
We started from scrap with the notifications, but without any result.

Yes, it has worked perfectly for me and I am using BEWS9 build 4454.
However, this is on a new installation. I have another BENT 8.5
installation with the BEWS9 upgrade still in the box, so I am not much
help with upgrades. There have been many reports of the upgrade doing
things differently than a fresh installation. I would start digging
through the install logs and see if that gives a clue.

    Thanks Alex,

I will do that tomorrow, and let you know the result.

The installation logs that I have been able to find are:
    bkupinst.log and VxSDM.log both in C:\WINNT
These logs are very cryptic and difficult to understand, but as far as I
can see there are no errors shown in it related to notifications, or any
    other errors for that matter.
So I don't think this brings me further.

The strange thing is, that suddenly, as far as I know without changing
anything, I am receiving some notification E-mails for the last two days.
But these were only for "Database Maintenance Information".
In the same period we had one backup job failing with an error in the
alerts list, but although BE9.0 has been set to send an E-mail for all
errors, I did not receive it.
I also set the "Job success" category to send an E-mail, but am not
    receiving these either.
    Very strange.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks,

I have the same/similar situation happening. Notifications were working
well for a considerable period of time. However, they stopped working properly,
for no apparent reason (no errors). If I restart the Backup Exec services,
notifications will work for some time (not predictable), but will again cease.
Restarting the services again resumes "normal" operation of notifications,
    until they again cease.

I'll watch this thread to see if anyone comes up with anything.

bkupinst.log is the one. It can get very large and yes, it is quite
cryptic. I had to spend quite a bit of time on my last problem when I
finally found the clue in that log.

Yes, this is odd. I cannot think of anywhere else to look. I tried to
find where Veritas hides all of the recepient-notfication stuff, but could
not find it. Most of the configuration is either in the registry, xml
files or the MSDE database. I can only suspect that the gui is not
writing that information out correctly or it is getting corrupted as time
    progresses.

    Good luck, Alex Moore

I have been having this problem ever since I upgraded from 8.5 to 9.0
The notifications work fine after restarting the services then 2-3 days later,
no more notifications. Restart the services again and viola! it works for
a few more days. I have changed the recovery options on all the Backup Exec
services under Windows to restart the service if they encounter an error.
I will post a message on my findings.
Mean while, if anyone knows how to fix this problem please e-mail me @
    snegaard at Bernicks.com.

    Thanks - Shane

I contacted Veritas about this and they told me that notifications are broken
in build 4454 and will be fixed in the new build. Or you can reinstall BE.
They said that notifications will work for awhile, then stop. No fix.

Changing the recovery options for the Backup Exec services did me no good.
    Problem still occurred.
I will wait for Verities to release a new build.

If you have McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.0i -- check the default port blocking
