Thread: Can't backup a remote SQL Server

  1. Can't backup a remote SQL Server

    Hello.

I am unable to backup a remote SQL 2000 server with BE 8.6. When I browse to
the MS SQL Server server in remote selections it is all greyed out and I
can't select anything. I can backup files just fine but not the SQL.

I have the SQL 2000 agent running and the remote agent running on the remote
    sql server.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Do you have the SQL Client Connectivity utilities loaded on the backup Server?
(I generally just load all SQL Utils)

I have the Client Connectivity Utilities installed.
This whole process with BE has been very frustrating.

    Version of BackupExec?
    Version of SQL

From Tools/Options/SQL is "Enable SQL Support" checked?

  5. Re: Can't backup a remote SQL Server

    Chris,

We had this problem too. We finally called Veritas and shelled
out the $89 for a support incident. Our problem was that we were
running a MSDE Database that didn't ship with Microsoft
recognizeable SQL Utilities and Connectivity tools. So we had to
download the trial version of SQL 200 and install the tools
(thankfully the tools won't cut out after the 120 day trial
    date).

If you get this working you'll know it. On your remote server
you'll see what looks like another icon underneath your remote
server icon that will say "MS SQL Server". If you don't have
said icon, but ONLY see the directory where your SQL server is
installed to and it's grayed out (this will stay even once you
get the icon from above) then your SQL Agent isn't installed
    correctly.

The SQL Agent should be installed on the server you are backing
up FROM (called the Media Server in Veritas documentation) not
the server with the SQL Database you are backng up. The SQL
Utilities and Connection Tools ALSO need to be installed on the
Media Server for the Media Server to see the remote SQL Server.

    Hope that helps...
