Thread: Cannot backup System State

  1. Cannot backup System State

This one is driving me round the bend. I've been working with WIndows for
years and with this problem for a couiple of weeks. But am getting
    nowhere...

    I have two servers.

    1. Windows 2000 Server SP3 with Backup Exec 8.5 Rev 3571 plus Exchange
Agent. This machine is the backup server with tape drive attached

    2. Windows 2000 Server SP3 with Exchange 2000 with Backup Exec Agent for
Exec (push installed from server 1)

Why oh why can I not backup Server 2's System State, but I can backup the
Exchange Information Store on the same server. The error report I am getting
    is:
    """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
    Unable to attach to \\OBE-S2\System?State.
    Access is denied.

To Backup or Restore System State, Administrator privileges are required.

    ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
    Unable to attach to \\OBE-S2\System?State.
    ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
    """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
I have tried running all the BE services (on both machines) as ServiceUser
(who is a member of Administrators and Domain Admins) and as Administrator.
But I always get the same message. I have also tried making these users
members of all the other Admin groups (Enterprise etc) and checked that they
have Logo as Service rights and even set their Primary Group as Domain Admin
    (as instructed in article 234562.

I DO HAVE ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES! WHAT IS THE PROBLEM !!

    Any ideas guys (and girls)?

If you reply to group AND direct to me I'd be really grateful - I sometimes
don't get the chance to check groups as I'm pretty busy.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Re: Cannot backup System State

    Stefan,

    Thanks for replying.

In what window do I select the server and system state?

Selecting it in the Backup Selection window does not give me the "Connect
as" option on right-click or program menu. Nor in the selection window of
    the job properties.

Where can I find this "Connect as" option?

  5. Re: Cannot backup System State

    Stefan

As I said below, I tried that and right-clicked and checked the program
    menus.

There is no Connect As option.

  6. Re: Cannot backup System State

    Stefan,

Did find an option called Set Default Attach Info - which I set for the
whole network tree. I set it it to my Administrator's account and password.
    This made no difference.

    Any other ideas? Anyone?

    Andy.

  7. Re: Cannot backup System State

In the Backup Selections tab, it's actually "Attach As" rather than Connect
    As.

  8. Re: Cannot backup System State

    Keith,

I know... see my later post.

Attach As is greyed out. Set Default Connect As is not. So I tried setting
this to administrator, and it still didn't work. And previously - when it
all used to work, I didn't have to set anything here.

    Any further ideas?

    Andy.

  9. Re: Cannot backup System State

I know this is no fix, but sometimes I get that error too, and after a reboot
of the system whose SS I am trying to backup, it goes fine.

  10. Re: Cannot backup System State

I had the same (or similiar) problem a few weeks ago. I solved it by making
a registry hack. Go to the Support page on Veritas web site and do a search
for the exact error message and you will be directed to the solution.
