  1. Backup Jobs Failed (Veritas 8.6)

We are receiving contininous failed jobs.

They all indicated that the verification process failed ? ?

    anyone heard of this problem?

    thanks,

    Ken

Is it saying that that the Verify failed?

or is it just saying that the job status is failed after the verify step?

we've seen the latter a few times, but I can't remember off the top of my
head what the fix/workaround was. Let me think on it a while.

Maybe the verify is failing, does a statement in the verify refer to
"different files" and if so a number found.
We found that when backing up 8 servers the backup for the first would run
an hour before the verify as the verifies all run at the end of the job. So
it's quite possible a file has changed and the job fails.

We switched the verify off, saved a bit of time and is it really that
    important these days?

It happens when it starts to verify

Is the verify even necessary?? if not i will just turn it off and see if
    that solves the problems...

    Thanks

Verify does NOT compare tape to disk. What it does is read the tape,
reacalculate checksums and compare them to those written on the tape.
If they match, the data is assumed good.

Verify does NOT compare tape to disk. What it does is read the tape,
calculate checksums and compare them to those written on the tape. If
the checksums match, the verify is successful.

What I would really like to know is how important Verify is. Our backups take
a long time as it is (12-18 hours for differential backups making it impossible
to complete them overnight) and the Verify operation adds hours to the overall
time. If it is only checking the checksums on the tape, what is the importance
of using it for daily backups when time is so important? I can see perhaps
using it for weekend backups when you have more time.

  8. Re: Backup Jobs Failed (Veritas 8.6)

You will probably get different answers for this question. I never run the
Veritas verify function. My tape drive actually does that very function
during writes. I have not had a tape yet that could not be read.
