Thread: the backup exec job engine service won't stay running.

  1. the backup exec job engine service won't stay running.

The Job engine won't stay running. I can start all the service but then when
I launch the Backup Exec interface the job engine stops. When I try to select
anything to backup I get an error "A null context was passed from the client
to the host during a remote procedure call".

There is an error in the event log from the Service Control Manager, Category:
none, Event ID 7031. the description is "the backup exec 8.x job engine service
terminated unexpectedly. it has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective
action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: no action.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've uninstalled edited the registry to
remove anything from backup exec and reinstalled. None of this works.

Has anyone found out what causes this?

This happened to me, shortly after applying SP2 to an Office XP installation
on the backup server. That is the only change made, prior to this message
    occurring.

The problem may be a result of changes to ODBC drivers or MDAC (Microsoft
Development Access Components?), or something similar, after installing programs
on the server. One person mentioned a Norton Antivirus Corporate installation...
again, there seems to be a component of Windows that is updated by these
programs, but is not supported by Backup Exec.

I had a similar problem with Backup Exec 7.0 but I can't recall which program
    had caused it.

Regardless, I do not have a solution yet.

Try to update the MDAC from Microsoft web site ...

I have this same problem on version 9....has anyone found a resolution?

  11. Re: The backup exec job engine service won't stay running.

Ben, I searched Veritas's knowledge base and found doc 262762 which told me
to deselect "display progress indicators for backup jobs" in tools|options|prefs.
I finally got bengine to stay running long enough to do a backup. Good luck.
