  1. backup jobs hanging in "running" state

Backup jobs begin...virus scanning works...backup of exchange works...then
job hangs indefinitely. The job monitor shows its status as "running" but
it never completes or aborts or anything. If you try to abort the job...it
says "abort pending" indefinitely but will not abort. The only way to abort
the job is to stop all BE services and restart them. Then the job dissappears
with no failure message or anything...as if it never took place at all.
An examination of the log file shows that the virus scan and the exchange
backup complete sucessfully...but thats it...there are no errors...the job
just hangs. Nothing in the knowledgebase that I could find. I have made
no configuration changes recently and BE had been working great for 2+ years
until now. I am using BE SBS 7.3

  2. problem solved

This was all due to a paging file size issue. The backup was actually hanging
during the backup of individual mailboxes (always has worked well for me...knock
on wood) The paging file size limits were just not big enough...which caused
all kinds of wierd symptoms. The regular backup would hang indefinitely
(as I stated in the previous post) but I could get a new backup job to run
(not backing up Exchange) Then I find when I try a new job to backup Exchange
it wont even let me expand the list of mailboxes or select exchange mailboxes...BE
would just stop responding at that point. Then to make matters worse, I
couldnt stop the BE services...getting all kinds of errors and couldnt stop
them at all. Then the restore tab was greyed out...I mean I thought the
whole thing was going to crap out on me. Finally after work hours I played
with the paging file size and got everything to work after a re-boot. The
recommended sizes may not even be enough. The only problem now remains...what
to do if you havent got the disk space for this huge paging file? Oh well,
I will cross that bridge when I come to it. Maybe this can help someone
else with some of these problems. Cheers!

    Well Done Todd!!

This is the answer that I've been waiting for, for at least 4 months!!!!

Very annoying as I know the software was working, especially as it works
    once after a reboot.
