  1. Strange happenings, bad block, cleaning job fails, etc

I have had a Quantum PowerStor L500 (14 tape autoloader) running successfull
backups for months. Then last week one of the tapes wouldn't come out of
the DLT7000 drive unit. We have swapped an identical (I think) unit from
another site. The first night after the swap, the backup worked fine, but
on each subsequent job, a CRC critical error had occured around the 2GB mark.
The weekly Cleaning job also failed, and fails each time it is attempted.

I transferred the tapes straight across from the first unit. So the software
configuration, server hardware, and media are exactly the same as they were
when working...the only change is the autoloader.

The errors in the NT 4.0 event log shows as Event ID 7, The device, \Device\Tape0,
has a bad block. Also the 5019 error shows in the application log.

Has anyone seen this? Does anyone have any suggestions?

The pressure is building! No backups for a whole week!

    Help!

Have you tried upgrading the firmware to the latest level?

Funny, I was just checking that. I believe I have 1.9 but...

    Will advise.

qntmdlt.sys version installed is 1.8 (but this is server software, unchanged
    between working and not working)
    qntmdlt.sys downloaded is 1.9

Firmware of replacement unit ATL L500 0022
Firmware of original unit ATL L500 001f

Interesting that the working unit has what appears to be a older firmware
    revision.
