  1. BE 8.6 Job Engine failing

    Hi,

I installed 8.6 on a brand new server. The job engine will just stop after
hours of running a backup job. It will also stop in the middle of the day
when we are not running any backup jobs. This is a 2000 server with SP1.
Fustrated because I thought 8.6 was suppose to correct the problems with
8.5. Any insight would be helpful.

    Thanks!

    Sue,
What do you mean the server just stops? Do you mean it reboots, hangs
or blue screens? We get the same thing.

I would recommend upgrading to Win2K SP2 though.

Sue still doing backups i see! ;-) I have to do an upgrade too in Racine
soon, so I am lurking around here. 7.3? to 8.6 on 25 servers... wish me
    luck!

This morning the backup job is still in the running status but no activity.
I checked the services and sure enough the job engine had stopped. After
the job engine service starts you lose the job completely from the monitor
view. Is this also happening with you?

I have seen this before actually. It usually occurs because of a hardware
failure with the tape machine. We have autoloaders, and if the robot runs
into something it hasn't seen before it will turn the drive offline, and
so BE just keeps trucking waiting for a response from the tape drives. Usually
the only thing that works is a reboot after stopping the BE services. Like
you said though, the job log is lost, but any data that WAS saved is still
on those tapes. You'll need to catalog those tapes to see whats on them.
Hope this helps a little. What hardware are you using? By the way, this
isn't the same problem that we're experiencing right now. Our servers blue
screen or hang when the OFO initializes.
