Hi All,

I aplogize in advance for the length of my post.....

I have tried technical note 190598, and this did not resolve the
problem.

We just purchased an HP Surestore DAT 40 about 6 weeks ago. Our Server
is an HP
Netserver LH 3000 with RAID 5 striping, Windows NT, serviced pack 5. We

have not been able to get a backup to run on it
yet, except when run manually, but only sometimes. We are using Backup
exec
8.0.

This problem started 6 weeks ago. After installing the backup unit
(SCSI),
and scheduling a backup job for the evening, I came in the next morning
to a
"stop error" and blue screen of death. We have SQL installed on both
the PDC and BDC, but don't use it. We never purchased the extra SQL
module, and are wondering if this might be the cause. After getting the
"Semaphore" error, we thought it was hardware, so HP came and swapped
out the i/o board, which turned out to be worse than the original. So
now we are back to square one, HP is saying it isn't the board, but the
device is bad. So they sent us a new device, which we will be
installing tonight. I am still thinking that this problem is the
driver. Since we have disable SQL and all the associated services that
load with it, I am hoping that this will take care of the problem.
Although I have disable SQL service on both the PDC and BDC, the I'm
wondering that since the SQL database still are on the server, even
though they aren't running, will we still require that extra module from
Veritas to run a proper backup. We have never been able to schedule a
backup, the problem seems to lie in trying to schedule, because when we
run a manual backup, it works, but not all the time. If anyone can
please advise on what might be causing this problem, I would appreciate
it. Below I have cut and pasted, backup logs, and entries from both the
system and application event logs on the errors that we receive from SQL
and the backup. I'm also wondering that when we are performing
backups, if we had SQL services disabled on the PDC, but enabled on the
BDC, would this possibly cause problems? I know that SQL is very
invasive. The SQL install on the BDC was a "stand alone" install.

This is how the dump reads:
Stop 0x0000000A
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

This is the error from the backup log

"Storage device "HP 1" reported an error on a request to write data to
media.

Error reported:
The semaphore timeout period has expired."

I've included system and application event errors below.
