Tape in DLT drive not being refreshed by BE on change of tape
Hi, I have a quantum DLT2000 tape streamer in a compaq Prolient 3000 Server.
I have installed Backup Exec 7.3. If I change a tape, backup exec does not
refresh and recognise the new tape. I have to run an invetory first. This
is obviously a problem when rotating tapes evey evening. If the tape is not
recognised backup exec goes into a pending state on the next scheduled job
and does not come out of it.
Anyone else seen this problem before. Any help is appreciated..
Thanks

Re: Tape in DLT drive not being refreshed by BE on change of tape
'Fraid it ain't a problem, it's a feature. I guess there's no interface
between the tape firmware and BE to tell it that a new tape has been loaded.
You have to tell it to go and look at the tape drive. You don't say under
what circumstances this happens. If you're just saying that BE doesn't
automatically display the new tape label when you load a different tape,
then No, it doesn't, but that shouldn't matter. When you start the save, it
will then go look at the drive that's defined in the save job. You may get
messages asking if you want to overwrite the tape, depending on how you've
set up your overwrite protection options. Do you have any alerts in your
alerts tab ? If it says to load a tape and you've already loaded one, then
just say OK. What you should do is use Backup Exec to label all your tapes.
Backup Exec will then place them into it's Scratch Media set. From there
they will be moved into whichever user media set you have specified in your
save jobs. They can then remain in the user media set for the rest of their
lives. When they are available for use, they will be flagged "Overwrite
Protect" - "None". This way, you should not get any messages and you won't
have to run inventories every time you load them. You will have to run
inventories as you load them for the initial labelling, though.
