7.3 catalog wierdness: Media ID {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
Hi,
Environment: BackupExec 7.3 2575 REVISED. Machine is NT4 Workstaiton,
Service Pack 5. BeCatDrv.dll is dated 10/22/99 and is 345,264 bytes. The
BackupExec account has admin rights, and I'm logged on as an admin.
I've been merrily using a single DDS2 DAT drive for some time. I put all
tapes into the "Rotation - Normal" media group. The catalogs of tapes
created/reused with this drive are fine.
Just bought a DDS3 autoloader, and installed the BackupExec AutoLoader
update. I renamed my old "Rotation - Normal" media set to "Rotation - Normal
DDS2," then set up a new "Rotation - Normal" group. I erased and named the
media in the all slots of the new drive. Then I did a full backup of all
machines.
Now, under Restore Selections, the Volume View doesn't show _any_ backups
created on the new DDS3 drive, except for one that I aborted. If I switch to
Media View, I see all the old DDS2 media with the appropriate contents, but
under the one new DDS3 media that I used, I see _all_ the backup sets. That
is, under the DDS3 media created 6/24/00, I see backup sets created on DDS2
media back to 3/11/00. However, I only see one backup set created on 6/24,
the one I aborted before doing the full backup of all machines.
I suppose it has something to do with this: under Media Management, the new
DDS3 media has a Media ID of {A762ED2A-4933-11D4-9E5C-00A024EFD0A8}. Under
the Restore Selections tab, the same media shows a Media ID of
{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}. Why is the Restore Selection using
this ID? Is my catalog still there somewhere? How do I fix this, and prevent
it in the future?
Thanks,
Mark Berry

Mark,
Shutdown the BE services and use the NTbackup to perform a quick erase on
this tape. Before restarting the services, delete BETOPCAT.IDX in the catalogs
directory and this should fix the problem. Make sure you have MDAC v2.1.1
or v2.5 installed as older versions of ODBC can corrupt the catalog index
file. To check which version you have, run Regedit and navigate to:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/DataAccess, you will find the version displayed on
the right window pane.
Good luck,
Paul
