  1. Job engine hangs, job disappears, no events in log ?

Sometime during the backup job BE is executing, the job hangs.
Checking the NT services learns that the job engine is no longer running.
Clicking the job in the job monitor window of BE makes it disappear.
No events in the NT eventlog. No events in the NT eventlog of the servers
which are part of the backup job

It has been running this job (backing up multiple servers with the Accelerator
Agent installed) without problems for some time, nothing has been changed
as far as I can trace.

    Sytem setup:

Compaq Tape Library with 1 DLT drive
    Compaq server running NT4 (SP6a)
    BE 7.3 Rev. 2575

Any idea what can be causing this or where I should start looking ?

  2. Re: Job engine hangs, job disappears, no events in log ?

I've got an answer from the Veritas support desk :

    Dear Sir,

It would be advisable to re-install your service pack and then re-install

Backup exec if possible, also please ensure you have the Veritas tape driver

installed, please call us in if you have any further problems,

    regard,

    This is a 'we-don't-know, just-reinstall-and-all-will-be-fixed' solution.
Unfortunately I don't have time for these bogus solutions, so basically I've
learned to live with it for now. I check the backup daily and about once a
month I'll have to restart the job engine and reschedule the job.

    hallo,
I'm using backup exec nt/2000 server edition 8.0 and Nt Server 2000 german
edition since some months without problem. Since about three weeks -no update-
the job engine stops and the running job disappears.
Please let me know if there is a solution. The veritas people asked me for
nearly 100$ if I will use the help of them!

Same problem for us using Windows 2000 sp1, BE 8.5 latest version

We have this problem every time we try to backup!

    Reinstalling BE did not help.

  5. Re: Job engine hangs, job disappears, no events in log ?

I was having the same problem before I loaded 8.5
Look for you Log files and see what file it is hanging on. Even if the
job disappears there is still a log file with what files and dir where
backed up. When you find the file or dir that is causing the problem see if
    it is corrupt etc.....

  6. Re: Job engine hangs, job disappears, no events in log ?

    Troy:

    You da man!
I didn't even know about the text log files in
    c:\program files\veritas\backup exec\nt\data
    until you mentioned it.

    Voila!

    here's what I found...

WARNING: "Barbara LastNameWithheld ?Top of Information Store?Inbox?transfered?Career
Symposium 2002 - Website proposal" is a corrupt file.
    This file cannot verify.

In fact i found a few of these.
Then looking at the end of the file i saw that the job log ended quite abruptly
    here:

Verify of "\\SERVER\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes "
Backup set #3 on storage media #1
    Backup set description: "Backup 0032"
Verify started on 6/14/02 at 3:40:48 AM.

    YES!

I'm turning off verify tonite. Getting everyone in the
log who has corrupted emails to toast em, and I'll report
back next week after turning verify back on.

    Thanks for your post

    Luke
