    I notice \Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\PVL.LDB is skipped at
backup. What is the purpose of this file? Is it important to
    restoration?

    TIA,

Stands for "Private Volume Library" and no, it's not needed for
    restores,

    BUT

it is needed to keep your system configured the way that you have it.
It contains info about your backup devices, your media sets, your
partitions if you have defined loader partitions. It also contains all
the stats that Backup Exec collects for each tape volume that it uses.

You could alway schedule a cmd file that shuts down BENT (which has the
file open as long as the (I think) media services service is running),
copies the file to (eg) PVL.MDB.OLD and restarts BENT. That way you
will always be only one day out of date.
