  1. Consistent "Media Failure" with BE 9.2.1401.3

Just migrated our NW5.1 sp8 server to a brand new HP Proliant server with
internal HP DAT tape drive on scsi controller and installed new BE 9.2 build
1401.3. Configured full daily backup job to kick off daily at 11:00 pm.
For the past 2 days I keep getting "Media Failure" alerts. Tape cartridges
are HP DAT 72. I've tried "Quick Erase" on the tapes prior to use but also
get "Media Failure" when I tried doing this on 3 different brand new cartridges.

Prior to migrating old NW5.1 system to new HP Proliant, I did a test by installing
NW5.1 sp8 and BE 9.2 Build 1401.3 on it and cataloged and restored data from
an old tape cartridge. Did a test backup to one of the new HP DAT 72 cartridges
and backup successful. I still had this test backup so to rule out a Device
problem I did a "Verify" and job completed successfully.

Do you think I just have bad tape cartridges or do you think this Media Failure
has something to do with migration of an old NW5.1 system? Previous NW 5.1
was at sp2 and running BE 8.5 but I patched it to sp8 before migrating and
I did not copy any of the BE 8.5 directory folders/files.

    Thanks
    Nadine

Please type LIST STORAGE ADAPTERS at the server console and then post
    back here with the output.

    Thanks.

  3. Re: Consistent "Media Failure" with BE 9.2.1401.3

    Chris:

LIST STORAGE ADAPTERS at server console gives:

    0x00 [V025-A0] Novell ATA/IDE Host Adapter Module [Slot 0]
    0x01 [V025-A0-D0:0] TSSTcorp CD-ROM TS-H192C f/w:B504
    0x02 [V358-A1] LSI_53C1030:10018 [Slot 10018]
    0x03 [V358-A2] LSI_53C1030:10019 [Slot 10019]
    0x04 [V358-A2-D3:0] HP C7438A ZP5A
0x05 [V504-A30 HP Unified RAID Driver [Slot 4]
    0x06 [V504-A3-DO:0] HP Smart Array 641 Slot 4 ID0 LUN0

    Note:
I am able to use my old 20/40GB DAT tape cartridges with no
problem/errors/alerts. Thinking I had a bad batch of 72GB DAT tape
cartridges, I return to HP Tape Exchange and got a new box of them. The new
tape cartridges still give me the "Media Failure" alerts. Now I'm starting
to think it's a BE 9.2 for Netware issue. The tape drive does say it's a
72GB DAT Storage Works Tape drive and HP confirmed that the tapes I have do
work in that drive. Tape cartridge part # is C8010A

    Thanks for your help.

I suspect the problem is because your tape drive is connected to an LSI
controller. These are known to be problematic:

    http://support.veritas.com/docs/278402

If the driver update doesn't help, you should consider replacing the
LSI card with an Adaptec based card which tend to be much more reliable.

  5. Re: Consistent "Media Failure" with BE 9.2.1401.3

Thanks Chris. If the problem is related to the LSI controller, wouldn't
backups on my Fujifilm 20/40GB DAT DDS tapes fail too? Backups and other
Tape procedures like Quick Erase are only failing on the HP 36/72GB DAT DDS
    tapes.

I was going to try and use Netware's SBACKUP application to see if it's a
hardware/media issue or a software (BEN 9.2) issue. It's so odd that every
single new HP 36/72GB tape I've tried thus far (7) have given a "Media
    Failure" alert in BEN 9.2

    Yes, good point :-)

Perhaps you should try HP's Tape Tools utility to check and make sure
that the 36/72 drive is working ok:
