  1. Restore ARCserve7 data with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3

    Hello again.

I am trying to restore files from an Ultrium-2 tape written with ARCserve7
with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3 and cataloging the tape lasts very long but it
works and so I am able to select files and directories for a restore job but
unfotunately only the directories are restored and not the files themselves.

Anyone ever had this bug or what am I doing wrong? Is it necessary to submit
the job at a later time or can I submit the job immediately to get access to
    the files.

So far, I was always unable to restore files from an ARCserve written media!
    That's really really bad.

    Best regards,
    Hammelbeine

  2. Re: Restore ARCserve7 data with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3

Will try with some files only and not with directories. Will post the
    results later.

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

    Regards,
    Hammelbeine

Can you try restoring 2 or 3 files (not folders) to see if this works?

You can run the restore now or later - it doesn't really matter.

    Hello again,

tried to select all the files in one directory but still no success. Will
try it again with just 2 files but I suppose this won't work as well.

    Any more thoughts?

    Best regards,

  5. Re: Restore ARCserve7 data with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3

    Hello,

yes, the catalog job ran successful and the data was originally backed up
from a traditional volume and the restore volume is also a traditional
volume. Will see that I can look into the restore job again to find the
errors reported but I remember there was nothing specially mentioned.

What I remember just in this moment is that I can't salvage or purge deleted
files on the volume. The restore server works on NW6.5 with SP5 and on
traditional volumes there are some issues with SP5 not being able to purge
or salvage deleted files. Maybe I must search in this direction again.

Will post the results as soon as I have solved this issue first.

    Best regards,
    Hammelbeine

    Hello again,

well, importing the NCP65SP5A did the trick with SALVAGE and PURGE but I am
    still unable to
restore files from an ARCserve7 written tape.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are the results of the RESTORE:

    Insufficient privilege for
    \RESTORE\\\expample.doc - SKIPPED
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, I am surprised! I am askin myself, why I don't have privilege to
restore files. Of course I have all rights to the complete tree and
file-system on the restore-server. Maybe, it has something to do with that I
am trying to restore data from a different tree???

Any more thoughts, what could be wrong here?

In the meantime I am trying to restore data from a BackupExec v9.2 written
tape, just to be sure, I am not lame at restoring data

    Best regards,
    Hammelbeine

  8. Re: Restore ARCserve7 data with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3

Thanks for the prompt reply again Chris!

The data that I am trying to restore comes from a NetWare 5.1 SP8 server
(ARCserve7 with latest patches installed), the restore server is running
    NetWare 6.5 SP5 with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3 running.

I am trying another restore with the debugger enabled and just one file
selected to restore and I will post the results as soon as I have them.

    Best regards,
    Hammelbeine

Load Backup Exec into debug mode (BESTART -ZL) and then run a small
restore (just select one file). If you get the insufficient privilege
error again - post back with a copy of :\bkupexec\log\ndmpd.log.

The data that you are trying to restore was obviously backed up from a
different server - what version (including support pack) of NetWare was
running on this server? Also, what version is running on the server
that you are attempting to restore to?

Could be. I used to run AS6 and once had to restore a system from
scratch. The user that was used to make the backups didn't yet exist
on the new system, so the restores wouldn't work, eventhough the
restores were being run as Admin. Once I created the container and
user that was used to make the backups, I was able to do the restores.

Granted, that was restoring using AS6. Maybe BE doesn't care about the
user. But it might care about the tree being different.

If you have a spare machine, install NW on it and create a tree to
mimic what's on the tape. Then do your restores to that system. You
can then copy data between the two systems by logging a workstation in
    to both trees.

  11. Re: Restore ARCserve7 data with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3

    Hi Chris,

I did another restore with debugging enabled and one file selected for
restore. I shortened the NDMPD.LOG, otherwise the file would have been very
very very long. Hope this helps? I had a look myself and found some errors
but don't know how to help myself in this case.

    Any thoughts?

Please note, this data has been written a couple of days ago on a server
running NetWare 5.1 SP8 with ARCserve7 and latest patches. It is a server
from another tree. Using the same user and context in the tree of the
restore server, which is a different tree, didn't help.

The data came from a server called FAKE100 and the restore server is called
    FAKE0001.

Here is the contents of the NDMPD.LOG:

  12. Re: Restore ARCserve7 data with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3

I used the same user and context in the restore tree but without success. In
the case that I am unable to restore data with BackupExec from another
server and tree (though using the right user and context and same password),
I might consider restoring it with ARCserve7 and NetWare 5.1 again.

Well if BackupExec might have problems with written data from a different
tree, that would be a great problem indeed.

    Hopefully, we find another solution.

    Best regards,
    Hammelbeine

  14. Re: Restore ARCserve7 data with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3

    Here's the problem:

    [00000313][08/08 13:53:28] SMS Error: fffdffc5 (file: mwritobj.c, line
    266)
Error Text: "(TSAFS.NLM 6.51.4 314) All resource names are already
    scanned, or none were found."

This looks like an issue with TSAFS.NLM. As the backup was from a
NetWare 5.1 server, it would have been backed up using TSA500.NLM. You
may want to try restoring using TSA600.NLM instead of TSAFS.NLM. Have a
look on your 6.5 server - do you have a copy of TSA600.NLM in
sys:\system? If so, try the following:

    1. BESTOP
    2. UNLOAD TSAFS
    3. Rename sys:\system\tsafs.nlm to tsafs.old
    4. LOAD TSA600
    5. BESTART
    6. Retry the restore

If you don't have a copy of TSA600.NLM on your 6.5 server, you will
need to download a copy of NetWare 6.0 SP5:

    http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/se...i?/2969166.htm

Once extracted, TSA600 can be found in \nw6sp5e\PRODUCTS\SMS\SYSTEM.

    Hope that helps.

    Chris

  15. Re: Restore ARCserve7 data with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3

Ok, the TSA600.NLM from NW6SP5E.exe (big file) did the trick.

I was successfully able to restore data from a different tree and a
different backup-account, originally written with ARCserve7 under NetWare
    5.1 SP8 on a server running NetWare 6.5 SP5 with BackupExec v9.2.1401.3. Now
I am investigating how to create specific batches (unloading/loading
specific TSA's) to start BackupExec for restore of ARCserve7 written data
under NW5.1 and BackupExec 9.2 written data under NW 6.5.

Next will be, restore of ARCserve 6.1 written data (DLT) under NetWare 4.11
SP6. If this works under the latest revision of BackupExec v9.2, then I only
need a NetWare 3.12 server to restore data from DAT-tapes written with
ARCserve 4.02n and restored with the same software, as you told me that
ARCserve DAT-written data cannot be restored with BackupExec unfortunately.

Many thanks for your great help again. I hope, some readers here can benefit
    from this thread as well.

Best regards and greetings from Germany,
    Hammelbeine

    Hammelbeine,

Thanks for the feedback. It's great news to hear that you've been able
to restore all your data using TSA600.NLM.

    Regards,
