Thread: Help refining backup jobs

  1. Help refining backup jobs

    I'm running BackupExec .5 on NW5.1 (6.0 soon). I'm using 35GB DLT tapes. I
currently have my backup jobs configured as follows:
    Job1 - Full
    NDS
    Main file server
    sys - 2GB
    vol1 - 13GB
    users - 15GB
    Administrative server
    sys - .5GB
    vol1 - 2GB

    Job2 - Full
    GroupWise server
    sys - 2GB
    vol1 - 8GB
    Web/Imaging server
    sys - 2GB
    vol1 - 5GB

Currently both jobs run every weeknight. I have 6 sets of tapes that are
    rotated (Mon/wed, Tues/Thurs, 4sets of Fri).

The problem is that Job1 is now too big to fit on 1 tape and 8.5 can't span
2 partitions on my autoloader. I'm not sure what the best thing to do is.
Here is how I see my options. 1. Change to differential backups, but then
I don't have the ability to restore a file that a user has screwed up and
wants the version from 3 days ago and right now backups already tape most of
the night. I could change my 2 jobs into 3, but then I'd have to spend more
time changing tapes in my autoloader, or I could only backup the sys volumes
on Fridays, but that really wouldn't buy my much space on the tapes.

What do you guys recommend I do? Backups are so critical, I just don't want
    to screw this up.

    Thanks,

    Brad
