  1. NDMP Error NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR(16)

I am receiving the following error when trying to backup NW6 SP2 with BKUPEX
    9.0 Build 4172:

NDMP Error NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR(16). Unable to open target media device. The
    device may be unavailable
or it may not be responding.

Anybody have any clues because I can find nothing on Veritas support site
    or forums.

  2. Re: NDMP Error NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR(16)

    Diana

Reconfiguring the SMDR is likely to solve the problem
To modify SMDR.CFG file from the command prompt

    LOAD SMDR NEW

The SMDR Configuration screen is displayed where the required modifications
    can be made.

    Disable NDS = Yes,
    Disable SLP = No,
    Disable SAP = No.

    Cheers
    Simon

Thanks Simon for the info. I had managed to get a good backup before reading
this and the only thing I had changed was: Media Server\Options\Agents\Uncheck
the Enable workstation agent support. I had read something somewhere about
doing this for a problem that was simular to mine. I did go ahead and do
what you had suggested so I will see if I still get a good backup tonight.
Thanks for your time, I really do appreciate it.

  4. Re: NDMP Error NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR(16)

Diana ..if you uncheck enable workstation support , are you backing up without
    Remote Agent support ? .

let me know if there are errors in your job log due to this .

can you backup NDS in such a case

i think reconfig of SMDR would be an appropriate soln.

let me know if you have any updates on this issue.

    cheers

    Simon

  5. Re: NDMP Error NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR(16)

    Hi Simon and Diana

I'm getting the same error (same OS and B/exec revions), but only when doing
a "Clean" through B/exec. The clen is run because the L20 tape library in
place here refuses to auto-run the cleaning tape.

    Thanks

    Anthony

I tried using the load smdr new command but did not have any screen displayed
where the file could be modified.

  7. Re: NDMP Error NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR(16)

I had this error and it was related to a communication problem between
servers. Fixed that problem and backup worked fine again.

Before running 'Load SMDR New' did you unload backup exec, run bestop,
unload whatever TS modules are running (TSA*.NLM and TSANDS.NLM) and unload
SMDR? (Unload SMDR first and it should tell you what dependent modules need
to be unloaded first.) All that has to be done to create the new SMDR config
    file.

Not sure if you figured it out, but you have to unload smdr.nlm first. NW
should complain about other NLM's having to be unloaded first, so unload
those, then unload smdr.nlm, then do a smdr new and you should be all set.

  10. Re: NDMP Error NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR(16)

I was able to make the changes to SMDR config file and that fixed the problem
for three or four nights. The backup ran successfully. Then the same error
started occuring again. Earlier, I had changed the tape drive hardware and
that fixed the problem for three or four nights but same error started again.

So I'm still hunting for a fix. Any more clues from all you out there??

First, I'd update to build 4175, then apply the lastest device drivers.

  12. Re: NDMP Error NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR(16)

Got the same error running BE9.1NW on a media server under NW6.5 connecting
to remote NW6.5 server and Windows servers.

Did the LOAD SMDR NEW, but wasn't given an option to disable NDS. Followed
the other instructions, plus denied a prompt to disable name resolution using
    the hosts file.

This did not fix the problem. Any more ideas?

FYI, it's no longer necessary to do this:

OK, but do you have any advice for the error situation that that used to be

I don't have 6.5 here yet, so I don't have direct experience with this
particular condition. I guess the only things I can think of are make
sure you have the correct entry in SYS:\BKUPEXEC\NDMPSVRS.DAT, and also
the necessary entries in your SYS:\ETC\HOSTS file.

I am also getting this, but only on jobs to back up remote windows server/workstations.
