Sound has always worked fine on the previous three iterations of Ubuntu, but
now with Intrepid it has become squirrelly. Every now and then a sound will
play and then blare loudly with distortion at the end. This only happens
occasionally and I could live with it.

The more serious problem is looping. A sound will play, say, new mail
arrival, but then goes into an unstoppable loop which continues until the
machine is rebooted. The loop doesn't stop until the shutdown is halfway
through its procedures.

The only clue I have at this point is that so far it appears to happen only
after the machine has been on standby. So I'm not sure if it's really a
sound problem or a power management problem.

The machine identifies the sound card as VIA 82C686A/B, which I believe is
correct.

Ideas anyone?
