Yeah. Stick with Windoze. You're not ready for something like this.

I assume that your post means that you also do not have any disk
activity for a while, or anything along those lines?
Can you press Control+Alt+F1 and reach a virtual terminal? If not, can
you press Alt+SysRq+k and does that do anything? Or, if that does not
work, what about Alt+SysRq+b?
Also, have you been able to use Hardy or any other previous Ubuntu
release, or any other distribution of Linux on this particular system?

That was wholly uncalled for.
Head on over to comp.os.linux.advocacy, your type is quite welcome

I will try the keystrokes and see what happens. I did get Hardy to install
once but could not get wireless or the sound to work. So I want to try 8.10

The keystokes did not work.
Seems like the keyboard & mouse stop responding.

Did you check the md5sum before you burned the CD? Here are some that
are shown on the ubuntu site. I believe that you can also check the
md5sum of the CD itself, but depending on what OS you are using to view
it, the commands are different.

24ea1163ea6c9f5dae77de8c49ee7c03 *ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso is the one I
downloaded with BitTorrent. Burned the ISO with ISO recorder v3 on Vista.
Did the CD check. No disk errors were found.

Okay. My next question would be to see if you can try to use the
alternate CD and see if you get the problem when Intrepid is installed.
If so, then boot into a recovery shell on the installed system (select
"Recovery Mode" in at the boot screen). When it gives you a shell,
bring up your Ethernet interface, and do:
sudo apt-get install openssh-server
This will let you login (say, using PuTTY) from another system. When
the console appears to lock up in X11, you can SSH into the box and
look to see if there are any issues logged in any of the following log
files:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/home/USER/.xsession-errors
/var/log/messages
/var/log/syslog
You can type "less LOGFILE" to display the LOGFILE on screen, and press
PG DOWN to get to the bottom of it. The relevant errors, if any,
should be in the last two or three screens' worth of the files.
If there *are* any errors or anything you're unsure of, please post
that so that we can take a look at it.
Also, if nobody here can help, I would recommend that you seek out your
local Linux User Group or Ubuntu LoCo. Many are planning installfests
and release parties (particularly the LoCos). You should be able to
find someone that will be willing to take a look at it for you for the
price of a cup of coffee or a six pack of beer or a case of soda, if
that even.

It *seems* like they stop responding, or they actually *do* stop
responding?

Assuming you are using a USB mouse and KB, it sounds like your BIOS is not
set up correctly to support "legacy" USB devices. You should fix that.

Does your "just" downloaded mean that is all you did.
How about the MD5SUM check to verify the download was good?
Then did you also MD5SUM the burned CD-R to be sure it is a good burn?
Finally, did you run the Check CD for Errors test when it booted?

They "stop" responding, or they never did respond?
If they indeed did stop responding, then at what point?
