This is a discussion on imaginary second hard drive - Ubuntu ; Takes 8 mins for Ubuntu 8.04 to boot up. Starts up then stalls for about five minutes, then finishes booting up. Can do it in about 4 minutes if i go through "recovery" mode. A "guy" looked at it and ...

  1. imaginary second hard drive

    Takes 8 mins for Ubuntu 8.04 to boot up. Starts up then stalls for about
    five minutes, then finishes booting up. Can do it in about 4 minutes if i
    go through "recovery" mode. A "guy" looked at it and said it was searching
    for a second hard drive (that doesn't exist). Win 2k takes about 2 mins to
    boot up on same laptop. Anybody have any suggestions? Tx.

    Find a new "guy".

    Soon as the boot starts, Ctrl+Alt+F1 to a terminal and you can watch the
    processes. See which one(s) hang.
    Or dmesg after it boots and wade through that to find what's hanging.

    Post a copy of /etc/fstab.
