Thread: Ubuntu on ps3

  1. Ubuntu on ps3

    Hi,

I am new to Ubuntu and Linux in generel. But I have succeded in installing
Ubuntu 7.1 on my ps3. But how do I install programs? I am in particular
thinking of vlc, but also other programs. There doesn't seem to be an exe
file I can doubleclick and then it installs?
I wan't to be able to play mkv and flac files if that's possible.
Also how do I access my Synology DS106E NAS? It's connected via my D-Link
    DGS1008-D switch.

Can anybody help a noop like me :-)

    Regards

    P

There are two places to install programs. Left click on Applications and
scroll down to Add/Remove. All you need to do is tick the programs you
    want and click on "Apply".

The other place is Synaptic. Click on System/Administration/Synaptic
Package Manager and, in your case, click on Search and type in VLC and
hit enter. It will find it and right click on VLC and choose Mark for
Installation. Then hit the Apply button. You'll have to key in your
password when asked for both procedures.

Leave the "windows-mindset" behind. Gnu/Linux and particular
*Ubuntu works differently. The magic here (among other
ways...) is performed via "Synaptic" its in System-tools
(depending on the Version you installed) using this tool you
can search for some applications by name, you tick what you
want to install and then all the necessary packages are
being installed. IMHO a better approach then under Windows.

Do you have a running OS on that PC? Do you use a NIC a
network card, or is the PC directly connected to the switch?
If you have Windows running on the Box you could get the
information like if you have a "static IP" Addressee
(doesn't change) or if its dynamic.

you'd be hard pressed to find someone that has never heard of Vista.
