    Hello,

When i click on system/quit it takes more than one minute before i get
the window that allows me to stop the system... very very long !
Before (what ?) i got that window instantly.
    Ubuntu 8.04.

A good start would be to go to System / Administration / System Log
after attempting the shutdown (or on reboot right after shutting down)
and looking through those logs for errors. Typically 'messages' and 'kernel'
    are good places to start.

I saw these logs but i do not see what to search...
Could you be more specific ?
I point out : if i simulate the end process and cancel it (answer cancel
instead of stop) and go on working the next times i do that operation
    the pc answer is immediate...
But it is really boring to wait for more than one minute and i cannot do
anything else at that moment, the pc seems 100% busy.
    Thank you

The info in the logs is dated and timed, scroll to the end of the log and
look for errors. I cant really be more specific. You can try to repeat
the problem and then post the tail of the log(s) and see if anyone spots
    anything.

    man tail

    for more info

the logs are located in /var/logs/

or you can copy/paste the last few lines into a post.

I launched the stop of the pc at 19:04:26; it lasted until 19:05:26
I have logs and among them syslog that has six pages.
Am i allowed to send such a post in the newsgroup (i do not want to be
fired by the moderator !!) ?

I join just a few lines, may be it is not enough, tell me what ...Thank you

    Problem solved
I had to start the energy manager (system/preferences/start manager) and
now there is no delay when asking to stop the computer.
