Apparently XFS is far less fault tolerant than other disk file systems.

Would this be one of those occasions?

    What would you recommend? ext3fs?

    > Would this be one of those occasions?

I just upgraded to kernel 2.6.25.9 this morning. then in the noon,
    I fetched samba-3.0.30 source from http://launchpad.net/ubuntu.
I started dpkg-buildpackage on samba, and then came the XFS error.

um... I hope it's not related to the samba build script...

The whole xfs partition (mount point /home) just vanished...

Fortunately, I could still access internet. Just that I could not
    ssh into my server now.

Unmount it, if still possible, try xfs_repair.
I don't mention they changed xfs code with the new kernel, but you may try
to boot the old one as a last straw.

    Road to disaster.

That's what I use. Although reiserfs seems to be increasingly popular.

xfs and it's "known" issue with fault tolerance would worry me a
little. Although, I may well try it.

Why would that be the case?

You need to use smartctl to find out the status of the disk. Then you
    will know.

Thank you all for the input.

xfs_check, badblocks and xfs_repair reported no error.
So it's possibly a RAM issue...

It's working fine for me. So ...

Well... I decided to delete the samba-3.0.30 stuff.

You can verify this by running memtest. That's a program which is loaded
instead of an OS at boot-time (you usually can choose it instead of a
kernel). It's shipped with many Linux install-CDs. Let it run over
night and see, wether it fails. Then you're quite sure.

Assume there is no problem in my hardware:

The errors happened after I started dpkg-buildpackage
    the samba-3.0.30a.

Note, under the same hardware, I could dpkg-buildpackage
other packages, like the kernel, and .... squid-3.0-STABLE6.
    That might be interesting....

wait.. the squid-3.0STABLE6 was built with kernel 2.6.26.8, not
2.6.25.9. And 2.6.26.9 made changes to mm. Now... I hope I was not
dragging the kernel changes into this...
