Hardy hangs on log in
Having installed Hardy on my HP laptop with success I decided to continue my
testing by installing it on my HP desktop and ran into the strangest thing
yet--at least for me.
The installation goes just as one would expect, I'm prompted to remove the
dvd and restart the system and everything works with the log in screen
appearing. I log in with my name and password and the Ubuntu startup sound
is heard followed by the quick screen blanking as I expect the desktop to
appear but after a split second, the log in screen returns just as though
I've restarted the computer...I will add that we're talking only 1.5 to 2
seconds so it's not the computer shutting down and restarting...as I said,
when I hit return after entering the password, it's just like Ubuntu is
going to open my desktop but after the brief flash, I'm back to the log in
again.
As there's nothing else I can do, I can't make a copy of an error message or
anything else...all I can do is describe what's happening.
Have any of you come across anything like this and have any suggestions on
how I might get past it?
As a test, I inserted the Kubuntu dvd and it installed just fine...well,
grub wouldn't install but when I got prompted to try lilo, it installed and
things appear to work just fine so I know the system will work with a
version of Linux but, since I'm using the Gnome version on the laptop, I'd
like to use the same thing on the desktop.
Any ideas, anyone?

Install ubuntu-desktop and either uninstall or ignore
kubuntu-desktop.

There's lots you can do.
Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to another tty (shell). Log in and check
/var/log/Xorg.0.log for any errors.
Try doing 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' (no quotes) and make sure
you've selected the correct driver for your video card, etc.

Great, thanks...it didn't occur to me that I could install the other desktop
on top of--or in addition to--Kubuntu.

It's the beta...I thought the release wasn't out until later in the month.

Release CANDIDATE (last pre-release), not beta.

YW. I /try/ to go for the simple solution.

This only hung my system with a blank screen. Since this, I've done some
experimenting and, as I explained in another post, it turns out the
problem was in the integrated video. I added an Nvidia video card and
things now work flawlessly and my Linux experience is into it's seventh
day.
thanks to you and all the others who've been so helpful.
