Thread: uninstall avg antivirus for linux - problem!

  1. uninstall avg antivirus for linux - problem!

    Hi,

Some time ago I installed the free version of Grisoft's avg for linux. I
have been unable to update it as I get an error message:

"Error occurred while processing the update files"

This occurs after the download has been completed.

Having had enough of this I'd now like to remove it. It appears under
Applications - Accessories - AVG for Linux Workstation and it will run
from there but I cannot find it in Applications - Add/Remove applications.

I'm sure there must be something I'm missing - but as a newbie I don't
    know what.

Can I simply go to where it sits in /opt/grisoft and just delete the whole
folder; - or is it not that simple?

Google doesn't give me an answer I can I apply (but maybe I've missed
    something) so here I am.

    TIA

How have you installed it? Via "Add/Remove apps", via "apt-get",
via "config, make, make install", via ...

Then just open Synaptic and search for AVG. When found mark it for

Thank you! Synaptic manager is a new one for me to use. Its now on my
list of things to check in.

Synaptic manager is actually the primary apps manager and Add and Remove
    is a kind of secondary.

So, just for your future reference... Anything you install by running a
deb package is registered by Synaptic and can always be removed using it.
Plus you can always check in it what files and in what locations were
    installed.

    Nice.

Sadly Synaptic manager has not managed to get rid of Grisoft's AVG for me
    - its taken away the shortcut but the files are still sat there in
    /opt/grisoft.

Looks as if a manual trawl through and delete is the only way? or is there
a terminal command line I could try?

Thanks for your patience - I appreciate it.

  8. Re: uninstall avg antivirus for linux - problem!

run in your terminal the following commands

    sudo updatedb
    locate grisoft

then just delete manualy any files found at all locations

    run

    locate avg

then just delete manualy any fies found as well.

i had these trouble after installing avg myself. it's normal. avg
just does not make a very clean install.

then see if you have any avg/grisoft references in your home directory
and delete them. and after this just forget about avg. :-)

i personaly tried several antivirus programs that use dazuko for
real-time protection (as avg does) and come to the conclusion that it
just not worth the trouble. it significantly slows down a pc
performance without any benefit to you as a linux user, since linux
does not have viruses. all you need to make sure your windows is not
infected, if you have one on your network.

well, then have an anti-virus on windows and scan with clamav your
downloaded files in linux/ubuntu. another solution is avast.home.
that's easy to install and to use. and it does not involve dazuko, so
    there is no overhead involved.

To the OP, I just wonder if a "apt-get purge remove avg"
    would have done it. Unless you run the route "./configure;
make; make install" i.e. it was a manual install...

But "make uninstall" too could sometimes remove a package,
and (haven't done so myself so I'm not certain) in the end
only the last directory where one run "make uninstall" would
remain, and needs to be removed manually...

Maybe by now you have to delete them manually, I just toss
this out for any future reference.... There are more then
one way to skin a cat as they say. :-)

Thnaks - I'll give that one a go.

I've just installed clam on Linux to scan the files I get from Windows
users before I pass them around/save them to my XP area for the times when
    I boot into XP.

    Thanks again.

Maybe - perhaps too late now as I'm going to do the manual purge. Remeber
I'm still just a newbie so need help and guidance from time to time here

    Sorry, I'm back again.

The command worked and listed all but when I go into places - computer -
files sytem/opt and find the folder grisoft I cannot delete it as I get
    an error message:
'Cannot move "/opt/grisoft" to the Deleted Items folder because you do not
have permissions to change it or its parent folder.'

I assume I need somehow to give myself root privileges for the deletion -
    but how please?

    Thanks

In a terminal type "sudo -s" you will be prompted for your password.

"nautilus &" will start in the same "workspace" with
    "ALT+TAB" you can switch... .

in the terminal type "nautilus &" this gives you two windows
to work as root, one in which you still have the terminal
and then other for the file-manager.

So be extra careful to erase stuff you really shouldn't.

I know, I'm replying to myself - bad form, sorry.

Its just to say I found how to give myself root privileges in Nautilus and
    did it that way.

Thanks all and sorry if you've wasted a reply

Not understandable. Please do not top-post. Your answer belongs
after (or intermixed with) the quoted material to which you reply,
after snipping all irrelevant material. See the following links:

You don't need to run a virus killer on Ubuntu. At least not yet.

this is indeed dangerous way. one can occasionally delete or move
something in graphical environment while having root privileges.

being new to linux myself i always prefer to open nautilus as user to
visualize files location. and then run in terminal:

    sudo rm -v /path/to/file/file_name

one file at a time. or if i want to remove an entire directory with all
    it's content:

    sudo rm -vr /path/to/file/file_name

this way i personally feel myself much safer. :-)

In this case, rather than 'make install', use checkinstall. It will
install the files and create a .deb file for you for future installs,
and allows synaptic to uninstall the app when you don't want it
    anymore.

    Total and utter baloney.

Most people keep their private data in their home directories. bad
programs can be installed in the users bin directory or somesuch and
easily added to cron or somewuch if the user is conned into running a
malicious script. And NO the script DOES NOT HAVE to be marked as
executable to run. "sh script" is sufficient.
