How do I turn off these stupid yellow boxes?
Are they tool tips that come up every time I hover the cursor above an
icon on the task bar or a mail in Claws mail?
Dang! Why would they need to pop up to tell me the subject of an
email and pop up /right over/ the subject I'm trying t o view in the
message pane?
SHEESH! How stupid is that?
Can anyone help me turn them off?

Configuration --> Preferences... --> Display --> Summaries
Uncheck the Show tooltips box.
Other than that, do you like it? (:

Sheepish me, I should have specified either GNOME or CLI.

Even more sheepish me; I see you meant inside Claws mail, not
system-wide.
Yes, that worked for Claws mail and thank you!
Now if I can just turn them off system-wide...

Well hey, I might be able to help with that. In KDE we open
kcontrol and go to Desktop --> Behavior and uncheck Show tooltips. I'll
bet you GNOME folks have something similar in gconf-editor. (:

Yeah, but we have to compile it in.

You mean if you didn't compile it in, you can't run it?

Well, since you wrote that I have searched gconf-editor high and low and
have either missed it (although I read through each option, not just
those which felt as if they should apply) or am too dense, myself, to
find the proper box to tick. Maybe another try of KDE is in order.
Then again, I've always liked IceWM...

You know...one can spend no more than 5 minutes reading the **** you spew
into Usenet and deduce that you've got to be one of the most miserable,
rueful people plodding across the ether.
Do you get up each morning and punch yourself in the testicles?
I mean seriously...you're one of the most repelling people I've ever had
the displeasure of interacting with.
Take a look at yourself man...you're supposed to be doing this for
enjoyment/entertainment and all you seem capable of doing is ****ting on
people.
You must face an empty, empty daily existence.

Not at all, n00b. Now go put your crayons away, and bugger off to bed.

That was disappointing. I really expected more.

Yep, he's a big time ass licker. Just put him in your killfile and the

FWIW: not me (wondering why anyone sane feeds this troll).
I plonked DC years ago, and anyone repeatedly falling for his tripe. This
isn't so much personal, as improving signal in Usenet noise.
(Same scenario when AC and Sam went screaming over each other endlessly)
JMO; HTH; YMMV...

Ok, I'm starting to see he's just a troll. I'm not a regular reader in
these groups, I posted a question in the n.s.readers group and he pounced.
Thanks for the info, it's appreciated.

A couple of things that turned up in a Google search:

or

Hmmm, all are the same tip. But they (it) work(s)!
At least mostly. Some of the tool tips still appear. I wonder what
that's all about?
Anyway, thanks, Little Girl, you've been a great help.

Sorry about the duplicate tips! I run KDE, so wasn't able to try any of
them out. I'm glad it worked, though! As far as some of the tips still
showing, there must be another setting somewhere which will likely
only turn up with a thorough examination of every possible setting in
all your system defaults. Once you find it, you'll probably wonder how
you could have missed it. (:
