Thread: large file issue with AIX and rsync 2.6.6

  1. large file issue with AIX and rsync 2.6.6

    On files larger than 1 GB, we are getting this error:

    rsync: write failed on "/bigfiles/HAWK1_E2C_060310_2158.tar.gz": File
    too large (27)
    rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(291)
    rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (93 bytes received so far)
    [generator]
    rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(434)

    First off, I thought large files meant those larger than 2GB, not 1GB.
    Second, this rsync was built with large file support:

    rsync version 2.6.6 protocol version 29
    Copyright (C) 1996-2005 by Andrew Tridgell and others

    Capabilities: 64-bit files, socketpairs, hard links, symlinks,
    batchfiles,
    inplace, no IPv6, 32-bit system inums, 64-bit internal
    inums

    Third, I read about a problem with mkstemp on AIX in the INSTALL file:

    IBM AIX NOTES
    -------------

    IBM AIX has a largefile problem with mkstemp. See IBM PR-51921.
    The workaround is to append the below to config.h
    #ifdef _LARGE_FILES
    #undef HAVE_SECURE_MKSTEMP
    #endif

    But rebuilding rsync after adding that had no effect.

    I'm using AIX 5.1 with the 32 bit kernel.

    John.

    Boy do I feel foolish: this was a ulimit -f problem, nothing more.
