Default nvidia geforce 8600 gts

Hi,

I installed on new computer opensuse 10.3 .
on computer is nvidia geforce 8600 gts .

I installed the driver from nvidia-source,
like written on opensuse.org .

but with root
init 3
sax2 -r
or
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa

I just get very short the Nvidia-Logo,
after that I get an fatal error .

are there known problems with that card ?
is there any solution for that known ?

thanks for answers.

regards
Alex

Hello Alex,

I recommend you to proceed as described here:

First off, the nvidia driver name is nvidia, not vesa.

I have one that works fine. I use the nvidia repository and as I recall I didnt
need to do anything. Just install the driver rpms, logout, login. sax2 and
glxinfo confirm that it is working, but I make no changes there. Make sure you
get the right packages.. one is called G01. one is for older cards. I forget
which is which, and it doesnt say in the description..

Alex, read through this info, and especially the NV notes:
http://www.softwareinreview.com/linu...suse_10.3.html

I run an 8600 gts on one box and I have 3d no sweat.
BTW, you can get this amazing card for under $100 US now. It's overclockable, runs cool, isn't an
expensive 8800 and overall, a gift.

I have the 8600 GT. Suse 10.3 should have started with the "nv" driver
which should be changed to the "nvidia" driver after you install the
nVidia driver rpm.

Suggest you add the nVidia repository to Yast2 and install the latest
driver rpm then use the nvidia-settings command to set X11.
