Is there a way to do a reinstall and NOT run the boot loader again?
    There should be.

Well if there wasn't it would be really easy to revert it.

Just take a backup of the first 512 bytes of the boot disk using dd then
restore it when/if reinstallation overwrites it.

    eg

    dd if=/dev/hda of=/root/mbr bs=512 count=1

    then the reverse

    dd if=/root/mbr of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1

Change the device name accordingly. If you don't want to affect the
partition table use 476 bytes, not 512

    Cheers Bob
