    Dear all, I am looking for help regarding the following:

    About a week ago I received a new display on my desk: Acer P223W (22"
    wide, max 1680x1050). Of course I would like to take advantage of this
    beauty. As workstation I use an IBM R51 laptop with an Intel 855gm vga
    controller in it. I run OpenSuse 10.3 with KDE. Desired config is two
    displays, Acer right of laptop (15") woth the following resolutions:
    Acer:1680x1050 and Laptop:1024x768.
    Now, I have read a lot about this but without finding the solution so
    I am going to ask you all. Thanks in advance for taking the time to
    look into this.

    First I explain my problems in readable text and than I will paste
    some relevant parts of config and logfiles.
    I have tried two different strategies:
    1. the default that Sax2 writes to my xorg.conf is based on one
    device, one screen and dualhead xinerama options. this way the intel
    driver should make one screen out on two pipes. (Merged FB)
    2. two device sections with two screens, displays, etc and the
    xinerama handled by X.

    the problems per strategy:
    1. This leads me to a point where the driver logs that the Acer can do
    much more modes than the laptop and then searches one that can run on
    both (1024x768) and makes one big screen at 2048x768. With MergedFB of
    (this is what I tried on my Suse10.2 setup (with I810 driver) and in
    10.3 (with Intel driver) this one is ignored). It seems that the
    driver completely ignores the Metamodes part.
    2. This one brings me a point where no error is logged but no xinerama
    is working either.

    big, used 3 lines of "="'s to separate 1 and 2):

    adapter, driver combi. (windows does this without problems so the
    adapter can)

    After a lot of attempts with SaX2 this yielded simple, usefull result.
    I still would have to enable Xinerama, as right now it works as 2 separate
    screens like when it is defined:

    I can admit that I was surprised how easy it was to setup using this self
    configuring option of Xorg.

    SaX2 never found second monitor, and until yesterday I used xorg.conf
    created with openSUSE 10.2, that was created also after a lot of attempts
    to convince sax2 that I have 2 monitors. Last easy setup was in SUSE Linux
    10.0. The 10.1 had some Xorg bug that SUSE guys working on Xorg solved fast
    (thanks).

    The problem is that the 1.4.7 version is broken. Going to 1.4.6 should
    work. I have not yet tested it myself and I am not 100% sure if this is
    the case with the laptop situation, but it is worth a try.

    Those should be sufficient for display positioning with xrandr 1.2; certainly,
    you have a new-enough xf86-video-intel. I've done that with my laptop, though
    that's i945-based and I'm running newer X (7.3, from Debian unstable).

    I have read all your posts and want to thank you for your advices in
    the first place! I started with the tips from Rajko, rebuilding my
    xorg.conf using X -configure etc.

    This detects my 2nd screen (working at home now and there I have a
    samsung 20"wide, same resolution as the acer on my work) and decides
    to use i810 as the desired display driver. now, this has a remarkable
    result: at init 5 it logs everything about my 2nd screen, but ignores
    my LFP (localflstpanel (laptopdisplay)). however, in the end it starts
    x on my LFP, and completely ignores my 2nd screen.

    So, after fiddling a little I decided that I had to try the (newer as
    far as I know) intel driver named "intel". This one is even more
    interesting: it "crashes" (throwing rubbish on my screen. however, my
    computer responds to ctrl-alt-del to reboot (luckely I started my
    experiments with setting 3 as def. runlevel...

    now, the strange thing is that I do not use any obscure sizes or
    refreshrates (as far as I can understand then, I miss full knowledge
    on this) please advice me further if you want, and do not hesitate to
    ask more config/log/whatever you need to help me out! Thanx again for
    al your comments!

    You may be able to use fbset to restore the display:
    # fbset 1024x768-60

    Failing that:
    # vbetool vbestate save
    before starting X; then, when the display is corrupted:
    # vbetool vbestate restore

    No guarantees that either will work; but if one does (and at least one
    should), at least you shouldn't need a reboot to fix the display...

    That's old-style Xinerama; you don't need it.

    That'd be because of the total display width, I should think. I don't know
    the limit for i855, but I expect that it's 2048 pixels.

    Looks like that configuration isn't supported. It's still a bug that you get

    Only read half the thread, just some things you've got to keep in mind:
    there are 2 intel driver, the 'intel' one and the 'i810' one.
    the 'intel' one is for use with mergedfb and xrandr and the i810 one is
    for xinerama use. (Or visa versa, could be wrong here.)
    Just make sure you use the correct combo.

    Both xinerama and mergedfb should be able to make use of different
    resolutions, just make sure you use the same depth on both screens.

    Not relevant - that's for accelerated 3D rendering, and is for different hardware.

    Kernel docs say "for i810 only". ITYM the i830 driver, which is for 830 to 865.

    Which covers 3D for i830 to i945, probably also i965; however, the Kconfig
    text says up to i915 - looks like it's out of date to me...

    Now that was a useful one! I have searched around on the
    intellinuxgraphics.org site for a while but for some reason never
    found that page! good stuff, and now I tried the Xrandr thing.
    interesting tool that for the first time showed me a 1680x1050
    resolution on my big screen.
    A few things are strange, but I am sure I will fix that too: on init 5
    my resolution keeps starting in wrong size but when I run
    xrandr --output VGA --pos 1024x0
    xrandr --output VGA --mode 1680x1050
    I have followed the instructions on the intel page to build my
    xorg.conf, however it keeps starting with a small resolution.

    however, correcting it does not make much difference. when I start x
    it start my big screen in 1024x768, pos 1680 0 and I have to correct
    it to the opposite using
    "xrandr --output VGA --pos 1024x0 --mode 1680x1050"
    I don't see why it is ignored by my xorg.conf...

    there is one other interesting issue: my x screen is now 2704x1050
    (1680+1024x1050) and my left display is just 1024x768, so there is a
    "hidden room" below my little left display of 1050-768=282 lines. has
    anyone got some smart tips resolving this so that i don't have to ask
    my cat to find my mouse ;-) this is obviously not realy an urgent
    issue, but as I am getting into x now anyway I wanna know every little
    detail ;-)

    however, Darren: many thanks for your fantastic help so far, without
    it I would have never come so far!

    You could try swapping things around: swap the two Monitor-* lines in the
    graphics card Device section; for the external display, drop the "Position"
    option and say that it's "RightOf" "laptop"; and for the panel, drop the
    "LeftOf" option.

    Or maybe that Viewport line is overriding the Position option... oh, and you
    don't need the screen number and coordinates in the ServerLayout section.

    Looks like feature request time to me. :-\

    Versions of xf86-video-ati older than 6.7 (specifically, those with MergedFB
    support) have an option "MergedNonRectangular" which would prevent the
    pointer from being moved into the hidden area. Something similar for xrandr
    1.2 would definitely be of use...
