especially when ripping a audio CD.

I have noticed that DVD drives often are sold with a buggy firmware,
that gives lot of problems in linux, even if they work in windows,
maybe they add some last minute hack to the windows driver instead of
    fixing the problem.

I have had many DVD drives that had problems with the original firmware,
such as refuse to read dual layer, or refuse to set some values.

After a firmware flash, all problems where gone.

I recommende the site cdfreaks , there you will find the gurus about this.

    For your drive, check:
    http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/NEC-ND-3540A/

Your firmware is 1.01 , but nec has released 1.04 ,
and you also have hacked versions that add more features,
    such as Dee's ND3540.

Unfortunate those guys are Windows based, and pack their **** as windows exec,
instead of just giving you the firmware binary, so you can flash it with
    a linux flash util.

Are you using the latest firmware? DVD device errors normally don't
crash the kernel. How and when do these crashes begin? Trace cpu and
running process with Top or other system monitor.

Windows is here for many years a forgotten case.

Never new that that a DVD drive can be flashed. So i learned something new.

What is the best flash util for linux?

    Kind Regards.

They mostly happen when ripping a audio cd or playing a dvd. Just once, in
the rebooted session after the crash i can rip the cd or play the dvd.

    Kind Regards,
