I've heard that SUN announced discontinuation of V490.

What is the replacement? M4000/M5000?

It depends entirely on what you're doing with the v490.

T5x00 series will be a good replacement if it's a Java Application
Server or other general purpose app server.

M4000 is a likely candidate for direct replacement, but there's also the
rumored Ikkaku platform:

Official product name for Ikkaku is not yet finalized.
Ikkaku is a 2U, single CPU version of SPARC Enterprise
M-series (sun4u) server utilizing the SPARC64-VII
(Jupiter) processor.

which may be more suitable, particularly if you're a single threaded app
or a database-like substance.

They announced it, but it'll still be available for purchase until January
8, 2009.
You've got over 4 months left to place an order.
The Sun Fire 490 2100 model with 2GB DIMMs looks like a decent machine.

And will still run Solaris 9 if you can't go to 10 for some reason.

We purchased 2 - M4000.

I brought them up a few months ago. I am impressed with them, and
actually like them.
