Mark Hapner Provides Background on the Latest Specification

Mark Hapner, J2EE[TM] 1.4 Specification Lead and Web Services strategist
at Sun, has written a brief in Q&A format on what he calls "the Gold
Standard for Web Services," which is available on the Web

The J2EE 1.4 SDK includes both the Sun Java[TM] System Application
Server Platform Edition 8 and the new J2EE 1.4 Platform Blueprints,
which comes with the Adventure Builder application documentation, demos
and examples.

The developer release of the Sun Java System Application Server Platform
Edition 8 is part of the J2EE 1.4 SDK, the commercial version of which
will be released during the first quarter of 2004, according to Hapner.
Sun Java System Application Server Standard Edition 8 and Sun Java
System Application Server Enterprise Edition 8 will be released later
that year, he added.

Hapner characterized the J2EE 1.4 specification as the foundation of the
Sun Java Enterprise System, which will offer full support in future
releases. By the time Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8
is relased commercially, it will support the Solaris[TM] Operating
System (Solaris OS), Linux, Windows and the Solaris OS (x86 Platform
Edition). The decision on adopting an open source license for the J2EE
Reference Implementation has not yet been made, Hapner said.
